Question Weighted Vests

I'm looking to get a weighted vest. Just wondering if anyone here has had experience with weighted vests and how they like them. So far I'm liking the MiR 90lbs Firefighter vest. If anyone has used their vest tell me how you like them quality, fit, etc.

I have not used the weighted vests like that, but I wear my flack with the sappi's in them. Not quite 90 lbs...

What do you use it for?

I'm trying to get into the Fire Department. I'm going to use the vest to condition myself better and to also help simulate the weight that I am going to be carrying. I figure If I can get used to moving around and working out with 90lbs I won't have a problem with the 75lbs or so that firefighters carry around.

if you can, go to your local firehouse and ask if they have a ride-a-long program. if they do, see if you can spend some of your time there in bunker gear and wearing a Scott pack, and try doing some PT while wearing your gear.

good luck.

Thanks for the idea on that chip. I'll ask that when I do my ride along. In one of the fire science classes that I am taking now we get to run around in bunker gear no air tank though.

I thought you were asking to offer Obama a vest and take him for a swim at the local lake

That would be wrong, you should not think that way

I still use a ruck sack with a couple sandbags in it. Try putting on a blacked out training mask, (face piece) and practice doing left and right handed searches. A lot of new recruits have a very hard time with claustrophobia once they can not see anything.

Good luck,

Tim

We were doing something simular this past friday. They had us in turnouts and blacked out our goggles. In 2 man groups we were to go through this obstacle course that simulated a structure collapse. It was pretty cool. They had us going through holes, air ducts, through tubes that had electrical wiring hanging. They also had us go up and over 3ft apexes and a few of them moved. Since I couldn't see I was just imagining what it would look like by feel. At the end we took the goggle off to find out that it was made out of simple 2x4's and plywood. Took the fun right out of it lol.

it's a pretty cool training scenario, usually referred to as the survival maze. some of the more involved ones can include break away floors, collapsing ceilings, and dead ends where you have to break through dry wall with your axe/halligan in order to escape.

many dept.'s will conduct this training evolution while on air, and it must be completed before your bottle runs out. it's fun to watch a probie's reaction when their low air alert goes off, and they have no clue how far they still have to go- most of the time they're within a couple of feet of finishing.

Thought we were talking about scuba vest.. If that WERE the case I'd say go with the intergrated unless you plan on cave diving..

Do what we use to do inbetween classes at the Air Assault School to keep in shape, to put a sandbag in a rucksack and run 6 miles (anybody know engineer hill at Rucker?) Since you don't have a rifle and probably not combat boots or flack vest, add a sandbag.

Find some stairs and run them. A JC sports complex works. Everyday time yourself, when you get good enough you can tell what time it is by where you are on the stairs.

Well I just dropped my application off at the El Cajon Fire Department for their Reserve Firefighter Academy. I'm going to order this vest friday when I get paid. I'll let you all know how I like it when I get to try it out. Thanks for all the help.
