He was also the very first person to ever be presented with an Oscar Award as Best Actor was the first award presented that evening. He was born in Rorschach, Switzerland, the son of a German mother and an American father. He won the Oscar for Best Actor in 1929 for his work in The Way of All Flesh and The Last Command.
