Smile WARNING! DA Sander danger!

Well I tried out my new 6 inch DA sander today. I need to take the botched clearcoat off my truck so it can be re-painted.

Unfortunately I didn't read the fine print in the instructions, probably because they are in Chinese, where it says, "Don't put left index finger into the path of the spinning counterweight."

It took my fingernail partially off and bled for about 2 hours.

More seriously, what grit sandpaper should I use to prep the surface for painting? Currently I'm using 180 grit to take off the clearcoat.

Thanks

Edwin

if you are just sanding clear coat and dont want to spray color i thing 180 is way to aggresive. i would try 600 or 800 grit and do it by hand. then shoot the clear..

Actually I want to paint5 it a different color so I'm probably going to re-prime it. I need the 180 grit to cut the clear coat which is tough and way to thick. Then I'm going down to at least the original color. I can go back over it with 300 grit if necessary.

Thanks

Edwin

on the black part of my truck i used 180 to remove all the paint. 3 coats of primer, and wet sanded that with 800 and then 1000. sprayed the black and wet sanded with 1000. sprayed 3 coats of clear and wet sanded with 1000 and 1500, and then polished. can't believe how smooth and shiny it is.

Thanks. I've been told that 300 is fine for ordinary re-paint. I'm not after anything special. I just want a whit truck instead of black with a crappy clear coat. Why it was repainted I'll never know. It was a nice metallic blue originally.
