very weird tranny problem...whats wrong????

This weekend me and 5 friends drove to Illinois from Wooster Ohio. We were on the turnpike most of the way. We were driving a 99 Ford Windstar. About a mile before we get off the trunpike there is a huge cloud of white smoke behind us. We get off the turnpike and pull into a hardees pakring lot. big trail of fluid leads to where we parked. Get out of the van look under it and there is fluid leaking from the front, get a closer look and it turns out to be transmission fluid. After we eat we come back outside and check the tranny fluid and it barely registers on the dipstick. So we go to a gas station across the street buy the 4 quarts of tranny fluid that they have and one of those cheap bottles of stop leak for transmissions. pour everything in check the tranny fluid level again. still way low, takes 12.5 quarts.
Logically the tranny fluid that we poured in should have started leaking out again because the leak was massive and leaked all the tranny fluid out. but it never started leaking again. Limped it to a dealership and had someone from ohio come out wiht a trailer and pick it up and take it home.
I was just wondering if anyone could tell me why the transmission fluid did not leak out again...very perplexed about this. sorry for the long post but want some ideas here.

Where was it leaking?
It sounds like it was over heated and it blew the fluid out of the dipstick tube.

trans leak

a lot of autos that have excessive pump bushing wear will leak when they get hot yet will not leak at normal temps.
