USS Wisconsin Live Fire Video
 

Found a good video from a gun forum I visit once in a while. It's a live fire excercise with the battleship USS Wisconsin. The decription on the other forum stated it was the last time the 16 inch gun fired.

You should have seen the effect they had on the receiving end :o

I was in a tough situation one time in South East Asia and called for Artillery support. The loud voice on the radio told me to duck because the rounds were incoming from New Jersey. This struck me as odd at first because the radio had better reception than I ever recall and what the heck did the guy mean they were incoming from New Jersey?.

Anyway the two rounds they fired went over looking like a VW beetle and when they hit the ground the actual geography changed [laugh] The loud voice on the radio was hollering at me to allow him to fire for effect and I told him I didn't think they could take any more [laugh]

Later I found out it was the big guns from the Battleship New Jersey that had fired that salvo which also explained the strong radio signal, as the Navy has some of the most powerful radio systems in the world.

Just the 2 rounds from those 16 in guns landing dead on target did the job a couple Howitzers would have spent several minutes taking care of. I was extremely impressed with the wallop those big guns packed and I had no idea they were so accurate 20 some miles away.

all us Navy guys were talking one day here at work, skimmers & submariners always give each other a ration.

one the skimmer guys said he was on a DDG, somewhere near the sandbox, and they were lobbing Tomahawks at something late one night, the whole carrier group was out there.

they made 1MC announcements, and everyone was on deck, congratulating themselves on how tough they were.

there was a huge open space beside them, and the rest of the carrier battle group was circled out around them, some out on horizon.

he said they all felt Cocky and tough.


then a SSN starting launching Tomahawks from underneath the water.

he said it was the most awe inspiring thing he had EVER seen, and it made all their jaws drop.

he said it was one thing to sit there and shoot weapons,

but it was crazy to not be seen, and be shooting tomahawks

he said their crew gained a whole new respect for "stealth" and the submarine force.


when I was on a DDG, we shot the Mk 54 5 inch gun, and the shell actually landed ~15 miles away, it was like a splash in a pan, it was so far away.

we fired the CIWS too, thats CRAZY!
like a jackhammer rattlin the deck.

whoa. money well spent. THANK you navy guys, we never hear much about all you can do.

I signed up Navy Reserves (GI Bill) but was recalled for Desert Storm and got to witness the CIWS up close and personal and it was wild. I try to describe it to people but they just look and me and say no way.

I all I can say is AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Reminds me of watching the Mighty Mo in Under Siege. :)

Interesting experience TOP, I could only imagine what it would be like to see shells from those guns lobbed over me and hit the enemy.

Glad you all enjoyed the vid as much as i did, I find military weapons and machines interesting. When I saw it on the other forum I thought It was worth sharing here.
