I've been an AW type since 1987. I only got the SW in the last 3 months, since I was assured by a CWO3 that this was the only thing holding me back from E7. I should chuck that thing in the wide blue Pacific.

Oh, how many times have I heard that. I've actually resigned myself to retiring as an E6. Three more years til retirement, and I am only going to take this test one more time. Then I am officially calling "Uncle".

Well ... heck. Don't quit kickin just yet ... you are only guaranteed not to make it if you give up. With all the drawdown, troop movement ... etc... things could change and rebound at any time. May sound like something you've heard before but it does happen ... to alot of good folks.

It's just a bit discouraging, which I am sure you know. There was something like 64 eligible E6's at our command, and 25 made it.

My command is made up of predominately GSM/GSE's, and their promotion rate was 40%/69% respectively. OS's had rate of 29%, and it's probably not going to get much better.

Our other high percentage group was QM's at 69%, and we had 100%(5) of our QM's make chief.

I had a friend retire in '01 after taking test 9 times and it's a bit disgusting when you don't know why you aren't advancing. Oh well, it's time to stop thinking about this and look forward to my transfer.

When I was in the GSE/GSM advancement was darn near 100% for E-5 thru E-9, certain rates have high advancement numbers because it's hard to keep them in otherwise. My chief made E-7 with just a good conduct ribbon, he didn't even have a sea service ribbon and no ESWS back in 1990.

I was a GSE and life was good, I made E-6 in five years, at least I can say I made 1st increment each time and it wasn't just handed to me. I wish you luck, whether you retire as an E-6 or an E-9 you'll still receive a check each month that I won't. Just think when you get out you can get a job and use your retirement for BOMB's.

 

OS1, its time to change rates. Find something thats got a 75'ish % advancement rate. IT or something. If indeed OS rate is at 29%, they should put that chit through. By now you should have the QM rate figured out.

You should have done that years ago. Thats the advice from my three time CMC buddy.

edit: Welcome Aboard cowgirl; Navy wife is one of the tougher jobs around. Hope you're enjoying Port Hueneme. I get out there 3-4 times a year - on the Nemesis side of the base. My dad was a Seabee in WWII.
