I wonder if they would allow Christian students to wear a cross on their arm?

Iv'e been watching this story.
What is wrong with people?
Anyone who murders to get to Heaven is sick and wrong.
Must be SATAN'S helpers.
How can an educated person think this is honorable.
I am afraid a street war is coming to all town/cities.

Hmm- well I think I read the words of the chancellor like that, that he's only saying that a certain group of people will wear a different colour robe out of some reasons.
In my opinion it's a bit too rough to state stuff like j-fox said in this thread. I don't see any mention in the thread or in the article wrote by the chancellor. The way I think people like j-fox see muslims is like that: If it's a muslim he's definitely lying. If it's green cloth it's hamas, red cloth it's al quaeda, blue cloth is yadda yadda- and if he's naked he's an abomination to christian society.
I see a problem in the American society (that's what I see from here!- not absolute facts, just observations) - that the "christian majority" is getting ready to forget the words in the first amendment:
I think that the spirit of this amendment is that society should let people allow to wear green robes at commencement too, and that this shouldn't be seen as a declaration of war against everybody else. I think that at least some of the chrisian majority are getting more religiously radical than the average muslim.
Maybe I missed half of the story somewhere else so this is just some short observations I'm throwing in...

An important principle must be reaffirmed. UCI is a public university with people from diverse backgrounds who enjoy the rights and protection of the First Amendment. Our history includes the free and peaceful expression of political and nonpolitical ideas, no matter how controversial.

AlpineRAM,
Well said! It's getting to be that anything not totally right wing is declared unpatriotic or dangerous. We're becomming a country of robots. People are so scared of everything and so ready to have some knee jerk reaction to the slightest difference of opinion. Is it really time to arrest, jail, and beat students that have the nerve to wear a different color?
This country would not be so successful and such a wonderful place to be if we didn't have different views. Not every difference is dangerous.
Seems the terrorists have already won.

I always find it funny how people are all for free speach untill somebody says something they don't agree with ...........

Why can't everyone wear the same cap and gown that has been the color and tradition of most schools for years? Why do people think they have to make a political statement about everything? Getting a degree is not about Allah or God or what party you belong to. It's about the privilege of living in this country and being able to a college education.
I strongly believe in free speech and being able to express your religious beliefs and political philosophies, but some places it's just not appropriate.
A lot of people in this world, this country, and this board need to come a little more the middle. When you get too far left or too far right, you never see the big picture.
Just my humble opinion.

maybe I didn't make my opinion clear. I have no problem with diferent faiths.
But anyone who honors cold blooded killers is wrong. Period.
I know people of diferent faiths and heritages. I respect them all, until this crap came up.
What would this group of people say about me if I killed someone because I thought their opinion was wrong.
They would scream of hatred and want to hunt me down.
They are free to express them selves.
To do it at a ceramony like this is out of place.
And of course to honor killers is whacko.

Didn't thousands of Muslims die at the hands of "Christians" during the crusades?
Very much a "worship our God or die" mentality.
I don't see anything about UC supporting terrorism, just UC supporting the constitution and it's amendments.
Not forcing people to stifle their freedoms during commencement.

I salute that.
Way back when I graduated, the men wore black robes and the women wore green.
What were we thinking.

I agree with the general statement, but what makes you think these students are honoring cold blooded killers?
A graduation ceremony is an inappropriate place to to flaunt any religious extremism (Christian or Muslim). But honoring cold blooded killers? Hmmm, maybe, but where did you see that in the literature? Or don't you need to?
We are all going to have to find a way to get along, or we are all going to go down in flames. I'm afraid the war has already begun, and we have plenty of weapons and hatred to do the job. So what is holding us back? Why not finish the job now? Because we and everyone else will be destroyed in the process. We have to get away from the idea that "my god is better than your god" or "god is on my side" or "I know what's best for you because god told me and it's my job to make you comply". Somehow, and I don't know how, we are going to have to find a way to stop the killing and begin to tolerate each other. Somehow.
Ok, I'm climbing back down from the soapbox, the rant's over, time to fire up the Cummins.

I didn't read anywhere in that article that the college was suporting terrorisim.
Read the article again without the spin.
Being a veteran I am very concerened of our Constitutional rights being used & abused to further certin special interest groups agenda.
I don't care if you lean towards the left or the right but if some middle ground is not atainable then niether is peace & harmony.

If some Americans were graduating in a muslim country , I wonder if they could wear a red white and blue arm band? I am sick and tired of hearing about the peaceful religion of islam. All infidels have to die in islam. Probably not a real popular opinion , but it is mine. In America you have free will. Free to choose whatever religion you want. Great! If your religion states that all nonbelievers should die , well thats when I have a big problem with it!
Kelley et al: I think that the opinion that Islam is proposing that all infidels must die is truely far fetched. I'd suggest that everybody who claims this or that on Islam should search for these points in the Koran. I had some heated discussions with some members here and on some other boards about it. I found that lots of the quotes allegedly from the koran can not be found in there. (According to european and american university translations).
Where I see the main problem is that there are people who will be radicals and support the killing of "nonbelievers" in each and every religion. It's easy to think that all believers of a certain religion are like that then. Personally I keep it like that: If I get to know a person I judge for myself based on his/her words and actions towards me. I couldn't care less about this person's religion.
I don't judge on religions- simply because I can't do so. I hold my beliefs and I won't try to force them on anybody else. I feel that if you want to judge a book you will have to read it. (You don't have to believe what's written in there, that's the judgement part) I believe that if you are a fanatic your actions will be the same regardless of what your beliefs or religions are. (I think I can say that based on history)
Maybe I seem like a supporter of Islam to some people reading me on this board. I am not a supporter of any religion, and I am certainly no supporter of violence out of whatever motivation.
And I think that if you want to lead you should show and live your values. Just because you dislike the assumption that it would be impossible to wear the sign of another country in an islamic state this does not constitute the necessity to reduce the freedom in your own country. (Especially if you regard this other country as inferior due to the alleged lack of individual freedom)
Well these are the cents I wanted to throw into this discussion. I hope we can continue it in a positive athmosphere.
