Still lookin????
Well as I posted in the first gen section im just about to give up on finding a cherry 92 or 93 4x4. So I was wondering if any of you have any experiance with gas dodges? Reason I ask is I had seen a 98 1/2 ton 4x4 318 and 5 speed quad cab with 49k on the odo, real nice, for 13k or so I gotta admit I dont belive the owner telling me he gets 19 mpg on the highway. I need a good daily driver and will not waste my 93 CTD just driving 400 a week to work. Its gotta last me another 40 years or so. Also I need a 4x4 to hit my favorite fishing/camping spots.
I did some research on various web sites similar DTR and many of the guys scared me with they said. Biggest POS they ever owned, 10/12 mpg, constant problems with pinging and intake plenum gasket failure, axle bearing failures, etc, etc, and worst of all, DODGE could flying, well you know what. 0 support from them, would not warranty, and arrogant as could be about it. Whats with dodge? is this true? Do they treat our new buyers this way? Granted this 98 is used and has no warranty but I really dont need another pile in my life. I still have to sell that 83 F250 I stupidly bought.
any advice would be greatly appricated.

My dad got a 02' CTD in 02 I drove it once and fell in love I had a 98 chy v8 . within a week I was looking for a CTD ,but I didnt want to go back in years and I was on a limited budgit.after about 3 weeks I settled on a 98' 360 it had the same interior as dads truck and Thats where the simalarities stoped !!! after about a month I realized it wasnt the dodge I loved so much it was the CTD. to make along story short my dad traded me even up !!!!I LOVE MY DAD !!! I went from 8 MPG TO 17.8 MPG
and when ever I drive his truck(the 98') Im thinking man what a diffrence. Now with all due respect When I was having my 98's oil changed the lot loaned me a 02 1/2 ton with the 318 and let me tell ya' that 1/2 ton 318 could blow my 3/4 ton 360 away I guess theyve came a long way.But the moral of the story is once youve owned a cummins you will not be happy with anything else .all I had to do is drive one.

I had a 99 318. It was junk. Ran bad, sounded bad, used oil even after plenum fix. Driving slowly it squeaked all over. At the dealer real often. They got sick of seeing me. Took truck back made a sweet deal on 2000 gmc 4.8l v8. Started doing alot of camping in the hills. Needed a real truck to do the trick,, 2003 cummins. Now I am happy
Btw best mileage on 318 was arond 15. Maybe it was just a lemon.

I've heard some bad stuff about the 318 also...one guy I worked with wondered what was wrong w/ his truck when the "check engine" light came on one day. Took it to the shop and they tell him his tranny is toast and needs replaced and they weren't sure how he even got to the shop w/ it looking the way it did!
In my opinion, if I was gonna get a gasser, it would be a Chevy w/ a 350. Those engines have their moments also, but they seem to be a bit more reliable than Dodge or Ford. And like was said before, "Once you go CTD, you'll never go back!"

Luck of the draw, I think. I had a '95 with a 318/5 spd and it was an excellent truck, no trouble at all. My '98 was a different story. It had all the troubles you posted, but the warranty was honored for all of it, fortunately. I traded it for the '02 CTD I'm driving now, which has been trouble-free for two years now. Since I seem to have bad luck on every other one, I think I'm going to keep this one.
I got an 84 gasser one ton siting out there in the drive right now. Rebuilt engine( 360 V8)and tranny, put about 4K worth of new parts and work into that POS over the last year or so.
The best gas mileage i could manage was about 10mpg, and pulling a trailer it dropped to about 7. Up hills it woould drop to about 45 mph and that was good for it.
Anyone want it?

My boss had a '94 with a 318, he put 220k on it with no major probs before his Dad gave him his old CTD. It's still the store truck, has over 250k on it now and doing fine. No way you'll get 19 mpg out of one though.
