Something REALLY different. Floating Chev
Just found this news item. Sorry could not transfer the picture.

Posted on Thu, Jul. 24, 2003

Creative Cuban migrants halted by the Coast Guard
BY JENNIFER BABSON
jbabson@herald.com

More photos

TRUCK-DRIVING MEN: Cuban migrants using a 1951 Chevy flatbed truck turned into a raft in an attempt to cross the straits to Florida on July 16. GREGORY WALD/U.S. COAST GUARD

KEY WEST - Over the past four decades, Cubans desperate to reach the United States have crossed the perilous Florida Straits in just about anything that floats: Surfboards. Inner tubes. Homemade rafts.

But it's hard to top the latest entrant in the maritime scramble: a 1951 Chevy flatbed truck.

The green truck, tires still on, was mounted on a pontoon made of 55-gallon drums. The makeshift vessel even sported a propeller, attached to the truck's drive shaft.

It was cruising along at a leisurely 8 mph, with a driver behind the wheel, when it was spotted by a U.S. government plane 40 miles south of Key West on July 16.

Cameron Hintzen, supervisor for the U.S. Border Patrol in the Keys, has seen his share of Cuban contraptions that have made the crossing. But Hintzen, who saw photos of the truck at sea, called it ``the most creative vessel I have seen so far.''

Ingenuity, however, didn't translate to success. The U.S. Coast Guard took the dozen Cubans aboard the truck back to the island last weekend.

The Coast Guard, calling the truck a ''hazard to navigation,'' sank it.

Sorry Chevy guys....it was just toooo easy.
It's still a shame to waste an old classic truck like that.

Craziest thing I ever saw
.

But ya know ... you have to give them credit for creating such a contraption and making it work. The un-sinkable Titanic sank, remember ?

When a chevy breaks down on land, a guy can always coast to the side of the road ... so what happens when he is cruising in 300 feet of shark infested water ??

PISTOL

It's too bad that they sank it, cool old trucks like that are rare. First thing I thought when I saw it on tv was that the Cubans could sell it and earn some good starting out cash. And you know that they take care of their autos in cuba, since they don't get any new ones. ;D
