Snow plowing

Hey all, got a few questions about it and setting up the truck for doing this.

1. How much will a halfway decent plow cost me (I am not looking for top of the line so please refrain from tell me all about the best line out there like you did for my matris question...)?

2. What type of extra maintenance should I look to be ready to do to the truck?

3. Anyone in the DC area know how I would get in contact with a company with contracts for this work already? I figure that would be the way to make sure I have certain work this winter.

4. How much should I be making from this hourly?

Hmmm, a few things come to mind immediately:

- Yellow pages under Snow Removal; the Annapolis book has about a page worth of companies that you could call and negotiate something with.

- Yellow pages under Landscaping; stop at a landscaping company and talk to them.

- At this time of year in the AA, Howard and PG counties there are signs posted on the corners of busier intersections looking for people with trucks/plows that want to plow. I'm sure its the same in Rockville.

- try an internet search under "snow removal Rockville".

- Stop and talk with one of the zillions of guys who mow lawns out there (they're still mowing here) - many of them plow snow in the winter to stay busy and use their trucks.

- talk with the manager of large stores/shopping malls/hospitals and ask who they contract with.

- Start thinking of all those places that need to be cleaned off when that half inch of snow clobbers us and brings the entire DC area to a standstill.

the list is almost endless.

Well I cant imagine the US is much different than Canada for snow plowing. I tried it a few years ago with a bobcat. It was not a nice experience and not big in the cash dept. Be prepared for getting up when mother nature lets fly, any time any day. Be prepared to be everywhere all at once, everybody wants their snow done first. Nobody enjoys the noise early in the AM. Be prepared for people in complexes not liking where you put the snow, they dont seem to remember it melts!! I found that every landscaper in town wanted to plow snow and they all undercut each other. I'd much rather do something else and watch the snow and enjoy it.
Hope this helps you out.
