Smokin' like a steam engine!

Ya gotta love old tractors...
I was driving a JD 7520 for work today and I went to put the plow in the ground and barely got the thing in the ground and the tractor just bogged down completely and started spewing out so much smoke I couldnt see where I was going... I know I had plowed with that plow and tractor before so i knew something was wrong after i plowed for about 30 minutes and it didn't get any better..
so the boss and I changed the fuel filters and it didn't help, then I remembered reading something about dirty air filters and smoke on here so I told my boss that we should check the air filter and he said that his son told him it shouldnt be dirty and we shouldnt need to check it....but I checked it anyways.....the air filter was so full of dirt that I could barely lift it out of the housing because it was so heavy...got it cleaned up, put it back in, and the tractor ran like new!

always check all the filters and grease everything before you even start the equipment. ive been in farming for over 20 years and that was the first thing i was taught when i was very young.

Well..the son that owns the tractor works on another job all day, so his dad and I go out to the farm and do the work for him..and the son usually changes the air filter every spring, and yeah.. well i guess he forgot this year. I usually drive their 8640 which the dad owns and takes care of a lot better than the son takes care of his 7520 so the dad isn't used to having to change filters. And the dad is a 3rd generation farmer so what he says usually goes..i have to admit..it was fun watching all that smoke belch out of the pipe

and the steaming would depend upon whether it is a condensing steam engine(like on a ship or powerplant) or non condensing like a tractor or locomotive......

sorry rat, steam loco's are one of my little expensive hobbies.

Haha that's really cool! I like steam engines also, I even have a little live steam model tractor sitting here next to my desk so im talking non-condensing ...let me rephrase the title....smokin' like a coal engine!
