I teach high school, and get many, many invitations every year. I can't afford to give each one money, let alone $50.00. I try to find a card that fits the personality of the student, and then write something personal. If it's family or family friend, then I break out the checkbook. I know, my situation is different than most of yours, but I had to add my .02.<br><br>DeWain

I got between $25-100 for graduation. I got $100 from our stock broker and from someone I've never even heard of. I also got an atomic alarm clock (the clocks that get their signal from the nuclear clock in Utah. Supposed to be the most accurate clocks in the world.) I also got a set of monogrammed bath towels and a laundry bag. I got a 19&quot; TV from dad's family.

It got so bad in our school that the school board had to pass a Policy which prohibited students from giving their teacher's grad announcements, and teachers from giving students gifts. Before the policy, some teachers received as many as 100+ announcements from their students.<br><br>We limit grad gifts to grandchildren, nieces and nephews. On occasion we have given a gift to the children of a special friend.<br>A nice card to others is all that should be expected of friends who come out of the woodwork at grad time.<br><br>As to the amound, that should be based on the ability of the giver, a private matter. When I graduated in 1952 the $5 bill my grandmother meant much more to me as grandma had a $40 per month pension to live on.

Seems the kids these days expect too much. In my opinion, they should be thankful they got a free education, with their parents support, instead of having to go to work at 14 to help support the family.

Very true. I will say this though....when I graduated both my parents and grandparents and friends and family were all very good to me...and I was very grateful for it. I had to work my way through college and money was VERY tight...so every little bit helped. :)

Having said that, give what you think is appropriate within your financial priorities depending on the relationship you have with the graduating person. It should'nt always boil down to material gifts - sometimes just the pride and respect you show them for their accomplishment means a lot more than money or things.
