I guess I didn't understand it. If you had a left/right nipple, wouldn't one of the female connectors have to have reverse threads also?

The union worked just fine...

Yes the left/right nipple is a nipple/coupling combination. Half the nipple is left thread and half the coupling is left thread.

Unions are fine. They are easy to get, they don't fail and they are easily understood if you have to take it apart again (no confusion about left/right) But technically, according to code, you can't put a union where it is inaccessable. So the left/right setup is better if closed up in a wall or some other closed area. Or maybe where wrench access is extremely tight.
