For me I can't sit around and wait for my wife to find out when she'll get off work, or where we'll meet for dinner. When I get my self folded up in a planes hole and can't get my phone a text is nice. I finish what I'm doing and I don't have to call her back and interupt her work or waste my time retriveing a voice mail. Also texts will go through when a call will be garbled. When you almost have service a text will get the info through.

This is a good thread. Has a lot of useful info for people who break the cell phone "rules".

I was chatting w/ a girlfriend of mine one day, in the middle of the conversation her phone rang. I was fine w/ her answering it. She took the call and was on for about 30 seconds. I stared at her and she kept on chatting so I walked back to my truck. I was half way there and she said, "where are you going"? I replied, if you want to finish this convo head over to my house and do it on my time. She got a little hasty but ohwell.

I use text messaging to keep me awake during history, english, geography, and government. Computer class I'm to busy looking around on here to need it. I also find it handy if I need to tell someone something real quick without the usual "hi, how are you, what's going on, etc... part of the conversation.

Randy

May be late though, a girl texted me around 6pm, and it got to me the next day around 4am. She was less than a mile down the road from me.

Good tips though on the proper cell phone manners.

I do the same as big blue. And I have unlimited txting lol thank god...I dont really talk on my cell when I drive, I have bluetooth for that though. I agree with a lot of the rules set forth by hoss, but some people just dont know better. And on the defense for txting, it gets me through me classes and I have full on conversations with friends during those class times or when I am bored at work...Like I am doing right now....I just really like my phone and keeping in touch with my friends. Its just an instant way to go back and forth without having to hold a phone to your head.

This is where I find texting useful, mainly because I hate talking on phones.

I must just be old.
I've never understood the reasoning behind texting.

It's a phone, you're supposed to talk on it,
not take pictures, not play games, not text, not plan your day, not listen to music.

If you want to write someone a message, that's what email is for
(I'm not that old, regular mail used to have its place, but email is so much better)

No wonder you don't have a girlfriend. You are too busy sending them text messages and the smooth guys (like me & phox) are CALLING them.

Ed, wish everyone was considerate and went to the lobby or hallway....
too many DONT...

I figure my cell is liek my home phone... I dont feel a compulsion to answer it, leave a message, you'll get a call back. If its a real emergency, call the sheriff, they'll stop by and tell me to answer the phone...

Yeah, I got a cellular phone.

Yeah, it's in my glove box for when I need to call AA.

No, I haven't looked at it in over a year.

Cellular phones scare me. I'm more of a lonely, "I'll just sit around and talk to cockroaches all day" kind of fellow. I don't like telephones in general, and cellular phones in particular drive me up walls.

Strap 'em all onto lawn mower blades and drive 'em over mattress springs, that's what I say.

My wife and I travel for a living. We are in a new city about every 3 months. We use our cells almost exclusively. It is a real hassle setting up phone service for only 3 months. This way, we have the same numbers everywhere we go, nationwide. We don't have to spend hours on the phone telling our friends and relatives our new number every few months. It has gotten so that when we answer our phones, her mother asks what state we are in this week.

My phone is rarely on an actual ringer setting, almost always on vibrate. I definitely have a pet peeve for people who wear their phone on there belt, ringer on super loud, and then answer it and talk loudly in a normal place, ie restaurant /office/store.

I am a big fan of caller ID and big believer in only answering at appropriate times and calling back at my convenience, as Hoss said. Friends/family are always complaining that i never answer my cell phone. I fly all of the time and I always get a kick when as soon as the plane lands, everyone’s cell phones start buzzing. I will admit I will check my voicemail, but won’t return any calls until I get to my truck, unless it is very important. I am totally against allowing cell phones while flying.

Text messages are a great way to avoid being on the phone! I send maybe 2 a month. I have a company phone for my personal/business call; I have no idea how much it costs a month and what type of plan I have.

I have a hands free setup which I use if I'm on a trip but not if I'm just going down the street. My use of my phone while driving is no more distracting that your use of the radio or lighting a cigarette. Get over it.

Well, aren't we snippy this morning.
