Roofing $$$
If you buy from a roofing specific outfit they will charge by the "SQUARE" which is a standard roofing term for 10'x10' or 100 square ft, most asphalt or composition "COMP" ( "three tab" or "dimensional") shingles go 3-4 bundles to the "SQUARE". Most big box outfits , H-Depot and Lowe's will sell by the bundle, any where from $15 to $40ea. depending on style, and warranty rating (the 20yr 30 yr is warranty rating not an actual rating, you have to follow the installation guide to collect on any claim) Here in the Dessert your lucky to get 15yrs out of a 30, maybe 18-20 out of a 40. Where its wet and windy maybe more maybe less, tree debris, hail, wind, roof pitch vs water, sun, all these factors will affect the life and possibly the warranty.
I hope this helps, if I can answer anything else let me know. I have roofed for a long time both personally and professionally.

When the Hurricane tore up Brevard County Florida in 2004 people waited up a year to get their roofing fixed. A couple of guys rented a truck and went to South Carolina just to find shingles. They also found out the shingles didn't meet the Florida building code. The texas contractors have probably bought up all the available roofing material already. Check your codes and I wish you good luck. You can probably figure paying double right now.

Thanks dieselcarpenter your post was helpful.
I have gotten a quote for $30 a square for the 30 year.
I have 2 more roofing companies coming out to give a quote.
My adjuster will not be here until Thursday.

Dieselcarpenter is right, in our climate expect 15yrs out of a quality 30yr shingle. My roof (GAF-ELK Timberline 30) is 10 yrs old and held up pretty good to Rita and Ike. Didn't loose one shingle.

With $30 a square you are getting low quality shingles. Good shingles will go closer to $30 a bundle. You also need to look at installation. If you do the installation, you save money by buying a coil roofing nail gun and compressor over renting them.
I started pricing the materials. I have the 30yrs. 110mph shingles, and they were $72sq. at Lowes, and $63 at a roofing supplier. My roof was $4200 for materials and me doing it, or 8K and a company doing it, i said let them do it. If my wife or I get hurt it's more than the difference in medical bills, and lost wages, not to mention a ton of weekends I'd spent up on the roof when I got the time. To do it here now, it has to go down to the wood, all new metal flashings, ridge vents have to be added, new drip edge, the whole nine yards, even show a trash receipt where you dumped the garbage. I'm glad I had it done, best money I've spent in a long time.
Deisel Carpenter is on the mark.
More money= better quality....to a degree. An excellent roofer can install cheap shingles. However a poor roofer can mess up a lot of money in a hurry.
Advice: get references for contracor/labor and buy the best shingles you can afford after that. If he has been around for 10 or more years, he's probably a good roofer and will be there if any problems occur. Ask around.
