I was just looking over an email I received from Herb some time back where he was telling me about the new water system he was building on his property.

He was quite proud of his design and was literally up to his neck in laying out all the pipe and stuff, with the tank being on top of the hill to provide his water pressure.

I am saddened by this news, he had recently retired and was looking forward to his own time now.

For those of you who never got the chance to meet Herb, you missed meeting one of the nicest, laid-back, down-to-earth guys I've ever met. The wife and I met Herb last year at a camping get-together in Pigeon Forge TN. He came into the campground driving his rolling redneck residence (as he called it, actually a Kenworth RV) and towing his "HarleyRam" behind it (a really sharp silver 2500 4x4 Sport). Herb had put some nice "Limited Edition" emblems along with the Harley emblems and created what appeared to be a genuine Special package. I joked with him about getting sued by the Harley Davidson Motor Company if they ever seen his truck. It was hard to picture this fella in the bib overalls and straw hat to have been a doctor. He refered to himself as a worn out redneck orthopaedic surgeon. Funny thing was when he showed up at the group cookout with a bottle of wine in a ice bucket and a crystal wine glass, while everyone else was drinking canned beer. He liked trucks, Harleys, and tractors and would tell you, "I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot!"
I think I was the first to welcome him to this site and will deeply miss the chance to say goodbye. Our prayers are with his family and friends.

My memories of Herb will always be the quick smile and easy going nature. The best listener I ever talked to and the best talker I ever listened to. He was so proud of that silver 2500 and it is a beauty. He had just taken the seats and had leather covers made and was having the Harley emblems put on. Last time we were together, he got the info on my mirrors, had ordered a set and was getting them painted before installation.

Ever since I was recalled by the Coast Guard in 2001, Herb and I have corresponded almost daily by email. I will certainly miss one of the most memorable men I have ever met. He retired about a year ago and was enjoying life more than any one should be allowed. He was a model for us all to follow. Positive attitude, open mind. A good man. A smart, intelligent man. I miss Herb. Alot.
