Raising money for autism research

My 5 yr old son Tyler, who is autistic, is participating in the Walk Now For Autism Speaks: Iowa in June and he's trying to raise money for his team. He did it last year and he had a great time and raised almost $500. He's raised $120 so far this year. If he raises $1000 he gets special recognition at the walk. If you can donate even a dollar to help him out, he would greatly appreciate it. Thanks for taking time to read.

Thanks for the post.
Sometimes I forget about autism even though we have two families that we are friends with who have children with autism.
We are so used to being around the daughter of one of them that we never think twice about her eccentricities (pardon my lack of a better word).
For me, it was very strange, many years back when she was first able to tell me about her knowledge of her disorder (as she calls it).
Prior to that I think I had been distancing myself from people who had similar problems.
I mistakenly thought that they had no self-awareness of what was going on. Sadly, I think I almost didn’t think of them as people.

Just a few years back I discovered that my "Weird Uncle Allen" (he recently died at age 88) was finally diagnosed as being autistic when he was about 70.
He had been institutionalized at around age 7 and luckily my Grandmother got him yanked out after about a year.
He had always been a little different but was a fun guy and played a mean game of chess.

Didn’t mean to babble but I believe Parents of autistic children are hero's.
Thanks again for the post.

My department hockey team, bike club, and the stair climb team do charitable work for autism year round. To date the have raised in excess of $22k with every penny staying local to help local children with autism. They have also raised enough money to outfit several special needs class's with Ipad's.

You may want to visit your local Fire and Police departments, they may be willing to start some type of fundraising up on Tylers behalf.

Good luck and thanks for posting.

I appreciate your post. There are still a lot of people who do not understand autism and the walk helps to create awareness of it. Many doctors still have trouble recognizing it, Tyler wasnt "diagnosed" with it until he was almost four years old. He's an extremely smart little guy, just has his little things he does that many people give him weird looks about.

Thank you and your department for what you do. $22k is an amazing amount to have raised. I never thought of the FD/PD before. We go by the firehouse sometimes and they get a kick out of him. He loves seeing the fire trucks and equipment they have. Thank you.
