Hi folks, I need to learn ProE for my internship next summer (going back to Cummins Power Generation ), the only problem is we don't learn ProE in school until next year, so I've got to learn it on my own. I have been dabbling a bit after classes, I'm making some progress. Our ASME chapter is offering an Ironcad seminar for $20, 8 sessions. Are the two programs similar enough where I would build my ProE skills from the Ironcad seminar or should I just keep plugging away on my own? I'm just curious on how close they are to eachother, if anyone has any experience I would greatly appreciate it!

 

ProE is built all around a sketcher. If you can pick up a program that is sketch based, and you are "CAD literate", it should be an easy transition. We use Unigraphics NX at my location...

 

So you're saying Ironcad probably wouldn't help me become "literate" to ProE, if anything it would be the other way around?

 

I should have some material at home that might help you, it was from a pro e class I took in college as an elective. Do you have access to a student version of software? Some colleges have them at a reasonable price.

 

I would learn Sold Works if you learn anything. Once you learn that Pro E will seem basic.

 

What I was trying to say is that if using computers and CAD system interface comes easy to you, it is no big deal to move to a different system. They all pretty much do the same, just different names for the commands. If you become good at using a sketcher, such as Solid Wokrs, SolidEdge,...etc, it will be an easy transistion.

Pro-E operates the opposite of a program such as AutoCad. Meaning that in AutoCad one draws out the part (lines, dimensions, etc - much like drafting) and then the program renders (3d models) the part for you. In Pro-E, you are the one that renders the part in 3D, and then the program creates the drawing (with dimensions) around the part you have created. It's an awesome program, extremely powerful and capable, however it's difficult at first to lear as it's entirely different than sitting down and drawing a part. I would start with the following page of frequently asked questions and then pursue a web-based traing course as a first resort. It's really a program that you need to take a dedicated course on to even begin to comprehend it's capabilites. Folks where I work with 5 years of Pro-E experance are still discovering new features, or ones they forgot about. It's also called Wildfire, I'm entirely uncertain as to why.
