question on fabbing steps
question on fabbing steps
i want to build some cab length steps. i'm thinking DOM tubing with expanded metal covering. has anybody that built their own or bought some have any suggestions? I'm thinking 1.75"x .120 DOM tubing, but not sure if maybe i should go to 2"? i've seen some that i like, but never close enough to get material dimensions....
1.75 is a good size. If they're never going to get beat up on rocks, .120 will be fine. If they will get beat I've found 2" schedule 80 gas pipe for the main bar under the rocker holds up the best, and is cheaper than thick wall DOM. Then use whatever diameter/thickness tube for the rest. Also I wouldn't waste money on DOM for sliders, use HREW or pipe, it's cheaper. Here's a set I built a while ago for a Tacoma. You could do the same just angle them straight out instead of up.
I built a set of full lenght steps for my the 4x4 I used to have. They were 2" sch. 40 with 1/8" diamond plate on top of that.
I attached mine directly to the frame, and not the cab. They were sturdy. I had stepped on quite a few trucks that had weak steps, and I didnt want that. THey were nice to have on a truck that tall.
You may be able to see them in my gallery.
