Dang it....... this stuff always comes in threes. Two down, one to go. Prayers for the aviators.

Blue Angels coming to town soon here - the Sound of Freedom right over my office.

Well, this could be considered number 3:
1) News copter crash in Phoenix
2) Air show stunt bi-wing goes down
3) P-51 air show crash.

A truly sad event. I love those old piston engine warbirds, the P-51 being my favorite. Here's some details that I know.

The pilot of the P-51D (The blue and silver one in the picture above) lived and was able to exit his wrecked Mustang on his own.

The pilot of the P-51A died. May he rest in peace.

I saw another picture of the scene after the green one stopped moving, it didn't look good.

Oh man, there aren't that many A models left flying, who was in the A?

It wasn't Spiller's plane was it?

Well, I hope that's it for a while then.... I missed the biplane - hubby HATES small aircraft (big chicken) so he tends to turn off news or change channels when I want to hear something aviation related. Thank God for the internet!

Saw the news immediately after it happened. I have been involved with aviation most of my adult life, including the restoration of warbirds and there have been all too may times that I have lost friends due to accidents. Unfortunately many times I have also had to pick up the pieces of what remains of the wreck afterwards and that has never been a happy job. Hate to see aircraft go down, even when there are no serious injuries.
The only good side of a wreck is when I have managed to rebuild it and either see it fly again or fly it myself for the first test flight after the rebuild.

We left last year just before the TB-F Avenger ran over the light plane that cut in front of it. We watched the Avenger start up then we left. Must have happend shortly after that.

Too bad. Traffic control is excellent at this event but just the large number and great variety of planes landing and taking off tempt statstics.

Prayers for everyone.

Good God Almighty...... Poor guy in the little one must have had NO clue as to how blind to the front you are in a big radial-engined taildragger. Even taxiing slowly and doing a lot of S-turns you just have to kind of feel your way along.

Did it just chop him up or was someone hurt in that one?

Not related to the original thread, but yes, you are right. All taildraggers are blind to some extent while taxiing, but the taildraggers with the big radials are REALLY blind. Many years ago on a bud worm spraying job in New Brunswick they were using TBM's to spray and used Cessna 172's and similar for spotting. A TBM was waiting to taxi and one of our brand new 172's (less than 100 hours TT) parked diagonally in front of it. The TBM moved forward and in a second chopped one wing into tiny pieces and stopped when one blade of the TBM prop almost chopped one cylinder off the engine of the 172. The biggest piece left of the 172 wing was about 4 inches across. All that happened to the TBM was that one blade of the prop had a large nick in it.
