opinions on used SUVs
 

Hey, guys, would appreciate some feedback on an upcoming decision. I (we) need to replace my wife's Equinox by December. We'd like to get an SUV that will be big enough to pull a 20-26' travel trailer in the near future, and a 3rd row would be a real bonus. I'm leaning towards an '04 ish Expedition, but am also looking at an older Yukon ('99). Can someone also yay or nay 2nd gen Durangos for me. Safety for my family ( 2 small kids) and good winter traction is of more concern than fuel mileage, 'cuz we don't really put on huge miles. TIA for any help.

The room inside the cab, the bed, and the ability to pull a trailer...

if ya go expedition, find a 7.3. STAY away from the 6.0 turd.

The yukon will pull the TT, but you will be locked out of OD most of the time and expect to add an aux trans cooler and trans guage.

I'm with u guys on the megacab thing, but my wife says we only need one truck, and I'm not abt. to sell the '93. BTW, the Expedition is the half-ton version, gas job only. I've owned 7.3's before, and I would love an Excursion w/ the 7.3 and a 4" lift, but it's a bit overkill, also pedestrians everywhere would fear for their lives if my wife were to drive one of those!

Any 4wd will gt good traction, not a limiting factor on anything you're considering.
A Durango is going to get thrown around more with a TT of that size than a Expedition or Tahoe/Suburban.
All 3 will pull about the same (5.9 Dodge, 5.4 Ford or 5.3 GM). Personally I'd get a GM first, Ferd 2nd, and Durango 3rd, just ebcause the Durango is smaller and Dodge's cr@ppy shifting autos. (Had alot of 2nd gen Ram 1500's (same drivetrain as the Durangos) that were slopppppy shifting.)
I'm on the lookout for a good clean Tahoe/Blazer/Suburban pre 2000 with the 6.5TD for a 2nd car to keep the miles off the Mega Cab. Wife's killing me with that thing!
As long as you realize it aint going to pull like a 3/4 ton diesel. The big SUV's are rated for around 8000lbs towing, they'll pull the TT ok, just not fast.

Wife and I are looking at a 2009 Ford Expedition EL.. Nice SUV with the 5.4 and 3'rd row seating and tow package.. I like it over my dads 2008 Denalli.

As long as mileage doesn't matter...

Good friend has an 08 Sequoia (Toyota) and a Duramax extended cab. Towing their 30ft TT, Sequoia gets 6 mpg.. Dmax.....14 mpg.. Which one do you think they tow with now? Not to mention most SUV's are for towing sea-doos nothing more than a few thousand pounds.

I would get the Expedition. Our 98 has over 220,000 trouble free miles. Tows our 22' Baja easily and we have moved kids from school with a 16' enclosed loaded to the gills. Ours has the towing package. It has the heavy trans in it. Our next vehicle for my wife will be another Expedition 2004ish. They have the fold flat 3rd seat. The 5.4 likes gas but it is a good engine. All the seats are still in great shape on ours and are very comfortable. Great leg room in front and the middle seat. Ours has been a fantastic vehicle and I would not be afraid to take a trip cross country in it tomorrow.:D
