oh no! SKUNK!!

so....about 4 this morning my dogs woke me up wanting out. i let them out, went to get a glass of water, then went to let them back in. when i opened the door, my first half sleeping thought was of the VERY strong skunk smell. My 2nd thought was of my two dogs running straight at me at 45 mph (they're greyhounds). before i could do anything, they were in the house. it took me about 15 seconds to realize they were DIRECTLY sprayed. skunk smell doesnt usually bother me, but i admit.....i bolted. i thought i was going to hurl. i spent about 1 minute trying to wipe off one of them when i realized it was futile at this point, so i put them in the pen outside.

so now i have two, VERY stinky dogs.

one very stinky house

one very hostile wife.

the smell is trapped in my nostrils, so all i can smell is skunk, although independent smell tests of me indicated i myself dont smell like skunk.

any suggestions for de-smellifying my house? i found a recipe for dog cleaning on the internet consisting of baking soda, peroxide, vinegar, water, and dish soap.

i lit candles throughout the house as well as a kerosene lamp and the smell has lessened some. i plan to change the ac filters this afternoon also. the smell is still definetly there though, as my wife calls to remind me every 15 minutes or so . is there anything i can ddo short of burning the house down or having the cats pee everywhere to mask the smell?

Time is your friend............ I have found nothing short of time to clean our house of the smell.

Wife was just as P.Oed, but what can you do?

The dogs eventually learn, though our Pit still looks.

Pachouli incense MASKS it pretty well. Our dog never learns- she spends much of her time outside, smelling like torn-apart skunks. I just used store-brand gallon jugs of vinegar mixed with enough dish soap to make a rich lather (no water, not even to wet the dog down in prep for the bath), then I just let her run the yard for an hour. Then rinse. Does an ok job.

Beg,borrow, rent, steal, find an"ozone generator" as is used in fire restoration after home fires.Try rental yards etc.You would like to do this on a sat.and sun.with a timer.Set and leave the house. When you return(machine should have been stopped for at least 2 hours).VENT THE ENTIRE HOUSE prior to sleeping or any other normal activities.Carpets, either rent or get professional carpet machine, and use enzyme based cleaners.Buy lots of flowers for wife person.

Happened to me last spring at 4:00 am. My 200 pound Mastiff decides she just had to go outside. After letting her out I sat on the couch waiting for her to bark to be let back in. After about 2 minutes of being outside I hear a loud bang on the door sounded like someone trying to kick the door in. I open the door only to be run over be a 200 pound freshly skunk sprayed dog. To say the least it was an extremly fowl and rude awakining for the whole family.

The best thing we found to eliminate the smell was ivory dish soap and peroxide. Skunk spray is actually an oil. The ivory dish soap breaks up the oil and the peroxide breaks down the odor. We washed the dog about 3 times and it really helped with the smell. We did the same with the carpet and couch with great results. It actually took about a 2 weeks for all remaining smells to dissapear. Check out the web. There are several remedies to help with this

It's happend to my border collies twice! We washed them right away w/lots of Dawn dishwashing soap and then sprayed them w/"lassie" dog colone. Second time around we again were able to wash them right away and the smell comes off. I think by washing imediately "AND LOTS" of soap does the trick. As far as your house goes open the windows and buy some incents to burn.

Buddy had the same thing happen a while back. He boiled vineager I think for an hour or so and has had no lingering effects of odor in his house. He was amazed at how well it worked. His dog came in thru doggy door and dove under covers in to his bed with him at about 4am. Rude awakening!!

I have a small Jack Russel Terrier that used to get sprayed at least once a year. She is an outside dog so time took care of the problem. Either has learned to stay away or she has eliminated all of the skunks on the place.

Skunk spray is oil based. You need to use some thing that will break down the oil, like dish soap.
AND time.

yeah, they're still "camping" outside. still a little smell on their faces, but not too bad. doesnt make sense to leave them outside, inside the house stinks worse than they do! its getting better though. im going to wash them again with the concoction mentioned above and then again with dog shampoo. hopefully that'll take care of it.

it wasnt too bad last night....when i woke up this morning though, the first thing i noticed was skunk smell

Revision on the vineagar suggestion, use white vineager in large stock pot, bring to boil then let simmer for couple hours with house closed up. Good Luck!
