No smoking in Lincoln, Nebraska

We just passed a law that went into effect at midnight 1/1/05 that you can no longer smoke in public places. Bars, resturants, any place of work (except private homes unless you have employees.) We voted this law in because this is a college town and most of the service help (waiters & servers) are college kids. Second hand smoke is not good for anyone, let alone young people.

I'm glad they passed it. I can't stand going out to eat and smelling like an ashtray the next morning. There is no good way to have a smoking section and a non smoking section in the same building so we voted in a law against smoking. Which side of a swimming pool in the non-peeing section? They can smoke outside, but not indoors.

Its a $100 fine 1st offense, $250 2nd, $500 3rd. The business gets fined $100 every time a patron is caught.

Just want all your thoughts also.

Been that way here in Oregon for sometime & it does'nt hurt my feelings. If people want to kill themselves in the privacy of their own homes or cars let them.

I had a relief driver that would smoke in the tanker truck when I was off. Strickly against d.o.t. regulations. I told him I really did'nt appreciate getting in that smelly truck after he was done. He would butt his sigs in a wet shop rag so not to use the ashtray incase he got caught in a d.o.t. inspection he could ditch the rag. You talk about smell when he would forget to take that rag out when he was done.
I hate to be a snitch, but he just was'nt getting the message until the boss told him it would be grounds for dismisel if he herd of any driver smoking in his trucks.

they did that in Dallas a little while back...

which is fine by me because I don't smoke...

but none of the adjoining cities banned smoking in public places, so Dallas lost TONS of business from restaurant/bar traffic... and, in turn, lost lots of revenue.

No smoking in a bar? It doesn't really bother me cause I don't smoke, but I mean come on, it's a bar. Your supposed to be able to drink, spit on the floor, throw peanut shells on the floor, smoke, dance, fight, cuss, and sing. Maybe they are talking about a different type of bar than I am.

I smoked for 30 years.
Quit about 6 years ago.
Can't stand the smell anymore.
Go figure.

$3 pack X 365 days in a year X 30 years = new truck.

Having a smoking section in a resturant is like having a peeing section in a pool!

Having a self righteous non-smoker in a thread is like having a large bleeding hemaroid.

You haven't priced a pack lately, pushing $5 nowadays.

That equals a very nice truck.

I am very surprised that Utah hasn't banned smoking in bars yet, but it's coming.
Every other indoor location has been banned for a while now, bars are the only holdout.

My roommate is quitting smoking when he figured out he'd save about $1600 a year. And that's at a pack a day. Imagine the savings if you smoked 2 packs a day.

As much as that stuff costs per year you'd think poor people wouldn't smoke! I just don't get it!

What cracks me up is to go into our stations to drop a load of gas, & the kids that work there all smoke on their breaks. Considering they are making minimum wage, they are just working to support their habit.

I don't have a problem with people smoking in bars, because I don't go to them.

I just quite a while back. Ask anyone who has, and it ain't easy. I got good reasons too past the obvious, so it hasn't been too bad.

As far as out right banning it, not sure that I agree, but then again maybe that's helping out everyone.

Now, help me understand something please. Just how is second hand smoke worse for you than drawing it straight in off a lit hunk of tobacco? Not trying to be argumentative, but I have never gotten an even remotely reasonable answer to the question. Generally speaking answers I do get are totally useless, and usually that comes from people who get really emotional about saving the whales and so forth.

Oh well, off to chew another piece of gum!
