Thanks, those are very good instructions. I am going to be going to a class at the firehouse next week to learn how to use an AED since they seem to be cropping up everywhere.

When I learned CPR we spent hours just practicing the precordial thump. I havent had much to do with defibrillators and stuff since the late 70's. Guess I want to get my hands on these new units that they have just so I will feel a little familier with them. Now I even see them on airplanes but have never looked inside the box,.

All joking aside, if you are shown once, you'll be a master. I bet a semi intelligent person could open a box up cold and figure it out pretty quick. Basically, as long as you turn it on (big power button) and put the sticky pads on the victim where the picture says, it'll tell you what to do. It will tell you to stand clear of the victim, don't touch them so your heart rhythm is not picked up, and it'll see what their heart is doing. It will advise shock, or tell you to stand by so it can monitor.

There are only certain times when a shock can help, and it can determine that.

Not that I've ever taken a class on this stuff... I just stayed at a holiday inn express last night.

Those are both VERY accurate descriptions of how they work! They are as simple as me! Don't be afraid of them because you can NOT kill someone with one. If they have a heartbeat, they will NOT shock!

We have them at work. I know of at least 5 occasions in the last few years when we had to use them. One truck driver went sour on us and was probably dead before he hit the ground. The other 4 pulled through. Two would have anyway but two had to be jolted.

The little machines are pretty idiot proof and walk you through the steps. When they were first installed, everybody made jokes about them. Now, in a factory full of middle aged smokers, don't even think of messing with the machines.

Wow. Thats a good use of micro computer tech. Sounds like soon you will be able to just wear one on a daily basis if you are a candidate for a coronary.

They have been implanting defibs in people for years.

I shocked a guy that was sitting up LOCx3, he stated that his heart was racing and that he had priors. got him on a boarded stretcher and slapped a few of them electric thingy's on him got the read out and said, ok hold on this may hurt a little bit. Hit him with a few joules and brought his h/r from 270 down to 80 instantly. You get a defib on someone right away the chances of their survival go up greatly.

Not only keeping them alive short term, but also reduces the chance of further permanent damage and scarring to the heart.
