Need Help With Old Johnson
Need Help With Old Johnson
The outboard on my boat is giving me some trouble of late. When she's cold, she'll fire right up and run like a top. If I shut her down to fish a spot or whatever, if I don't wait long enough for her to really cool down, she won't start or else it takes forever to get her running. She ran fine all summer and this started about 2 months ago. She's a 50hp, oil injected, 2 cylinder, 2 cycle, counsil steering. Any ideas anyone??? I keep her in the garage and do all normal maintenance.
No boat expert by any means... But I've heard this one before. I think it has something to do with cooling, (water path) and the oil delivery. Fresh or salt? I'd make sure that you were getting/expelling water normally, and check the water delivery path.

Vapor Lock-----------This is what it sounds like!! The plastic Bowls that Johnson used on there Carbs are known for heating up really bad and causing the Fuel to Vaporize after you shut the engine down. I have had to gave many, many, Fuel Bowls replaced on one of my older 1999 200 HP Johnson's!! Fix= Replacement of the Fuel Bowls, adjustments of the reeds, and carb adjustments. I had the exact problem happening day in and out with the old Johnson. Push in the Choke while starting and hold it in for a couple of seconds. Once you put the boat in gear you will have to push in the choke again to get the boat on plane--------well this is what I had to do to get my 1999 R91 Ranger to plane out without killing the motor!!!! Good Luck------Make sure that you take the Engine to a Johnson Specialist that has been in the business a while!!!

Sounds like vapor lock. When starting it while still warm DO NOT use the choke and give it as much throttle as possible. If you have a remote shifter move it to the throttle only position, out of the transmission gate, and give it full throttle to start. Also, old gas may be part of the problem. Old gas these days can be just a couple months old. It may be time to do some carb work.
