Dad's still running the TORO he bought me in 79. It cracked the head and our neighbor machined him a new one and it still is running!

I've had good luck with Toro, Honda and the older John Deere's. Right now I've got an 18" Honda HR175 that my wife likes because its easy for her to push & I get to watch her mow!!

A new Honda will run you around $700 at Home Depot. That's the best price around here anyway.

Snapper makes a 26" walk behind for under $1000 they don't break down, but if they do you can fix it yourself.

I'll second the Snapper. I picked up a Snapper Hi-Vac last summer with the Briggs 8.75 Hp engine and it is just a pleasure to mow with. It started on the first pull this spring and is smooth as could be. Cuts real nice and even too. I looked at lots of options and went with a local dealer. I still do all my own maintenance, but still like to have a knowledgeable service shop if I need anything. I wanted the Kawasaki motor, but I got a good price locally ion the Briggs.

Good luck, there's a lot out there.
