Talking My newest Dodge Ram

Got a Dodge Ram to play with last month. My father in law thought me and my boys would have more fun with it than he did. IT didn't run when I got it, but I took care of that. Check it out:

It is a Kyosho 1/10th scale R/C model truck. It has a .15 cubic inch engine that burns nitro-methane. It also has 4 wheel drive, and a transmission that has forward and reverse. Runs about 25-30 MPH. Lots of fun.

It didn't run when we got it. It had an onboard electric start on it, but its gears were stripped out. So I replaced it with a recoil starter. The carburetor that it had was only a single needle which I upgraded to a 2 needle, (high and low speed adjustments) that works much better.

I've have electric R/C vehicles in the past, but this is my first nitro model. Runs like a top, and is really quick. Gotta watch it on turns though, real easy to flip it on its lid.

Who else here is into the R/C hobby?

Get some exhaust tubing and some small pipe and rig up a stack for it. Run it rich to get some smoke and let it roll

I was for a while. I had a GS Storm 1/8 scale 4x4 nitro buggy for a summer or two but it was more of a paint to keep running rite then anything. I bought it from a budie who had upgraded to a faster bugie and we built a minuture MX track for them. I was always breaking things and crashing so I sold it. It was like an old snowmobile. Work on it for an hour to play with it for 10 minutes. If I ever get back into them I will definatly go electric. A diferent budie has a couple electric trucks that are extremly fast. He has them all setup with brushless motors and fancy batterys and they will flat out haul. WAY faster than any nitro machines.

I been trying to get into R/C but it doesn't seem to work for me. When my Wife gets to chattering during the ball game I hit mute on the remote...doesn't work

All kidding aside I bet your boys love that thing Jamie

Yeah, the electrics now are pretty powerful now, compared to about 15 years ago. I remember back then that a Mabuchi 550 motor and a 1800 mAh Ni-Cad battery pack was hot stuff.

Haha, stacks, that's a great idea. That might even alleviate the oily mess that the exhaust leaves on the chassis.

Haven't even thought of taking it through mud. I'd hate to chase after it if it ever got stuck

My boys love it. My 6 year old has fairly good control without my help, but with me keeping an eye on things. My 4 year old on the other hand, has only 2 settings, idle and full throttle. Does the same thing for steering. He's managed to roll it over a few times . I usually "help" him drive.

One of the guy's I work with at my p/t job is crazy big into r/c trucks. He has several electric and gas powered, a couple of them will go 50mph. He was using one of them in the yard last summer, smoking the tires on it for all to see, pretty cool. While he was using it I was installing a kicker on a cb radio for one of the drivers. While I was setting the swr's I noticed that every time I keyed up the mic with the kicker on his car would go into a right turn and stay there going in a circle until I released the mic. He kept shutting it off and checking it to see why it was doing it, I would run out there with some tools and ask if he needed help. After 45 minutes of this I had to tell him, he was starting to get mad. We laughed about that for months.

Those things are really cool, the time spent with your sons playing with it is even cooler.

Thanks for sharing,

Tim

I've been into R/C since I was little, but haven't had much time for it recently. I have a T-Maxx and I put a bigger motor in it with a pull start. I had some sort of quad exhaust on it before but MAN that thing was waaaaay too loud! Right now it runs over 45 mph

I looked at the truck earlier, it looks like I could pull it off. I just need to get some small thin wall aluminum tubing, and punch a hole in the body shell.

I might order a new body shell and paint it like my own truck, and put some Cummins stickers on it. Then I shall call it, Mini-me

I used to be able to do that when I had a big radio...Pulled up next to a park on time where some kids were running there RC's and set back a messed with them.

The same thing happens in my girlfriend's Miata with aftermarket sound system when she passes a semi talking on a high powered CB. All of a sudden, we can eavesdrop in on the conversation and then it fades out as we pull away from the truck. Freaked us out the first couple of times it happened.
