making two stops at the same time ?????
Maybe someone out there will know what I am talking about............I hope, I hope, I hope.
On my 95 4X2 I have been noticing a strange feeling when braking to a stop. It doesn't have to be a hard stop, If the truck is just moving walking speed it will show up. And what I feel is the wheels coming to a stop and a fraction of a second later the rest of the truck comes to a stop.
Or.....................the front wheels coming to a stop and the rest of the truck stopping a fraction of a second later. Its hard to describe because I cant put my finger on what's taking place. Bottom line, there is a feeling that there are two stops.
Its strange, I don't even feel like I am describing it right. OK, anyone out there have any Idea what I am talking about? I would sure like some input.

do you have a full tank of fuel when this happens? (fuel running to the front of the tank and going "whump"
The brakes on the '98 chev astro van (company van) are out of whack, I don't notice the two stops but I do notice the front brake releasing then a fraction of a second the rears release.
(not like any of this is really helpful... But I'll throw it out there any way.)
Edited to add: It almost sounds like one wheel is grabbing and stopping "more" than the other wheels and the slack is taken up in the suspension.

Thanks Westcoaster, I never have thought about fuel, I guess it because I never heard it slaush back and forth.
But on second thought; I dont think it would be fuel as I get the same feeling when the truck is bairly moving.
It will happen even at walking speed.

Have you checked your suspension recently? You may have to jack it up and take the load off it and put a bar on all the hinge points and try and move things around. Or even try moving things with a bar but under load. How about a worn track bar that is allowing the suspension to move backwards and forwards depending on braking? Noticed any rattles lately when going over small bumps?

You just might have something there! Now that you mention it I do have some new noises, only when I go over bumps. But.........what is a "track bar?" I might know it by a different name !!

Just go and check ALL parts of the suspension that inhibit fore and aft movement. Eyeball the entire suspension and visualize what parts prevent movement and check for wear. I would suspect front suspension more than rear.<br>When you find and fix the problem please post the fix.

No track bar on 2X4.<br><br>Check to see if you have a loose ball joint or upper A-arm bushing blown out. This will allow the spindle to shift under heavy load (like braking) and might cause what you are feeling. Could also be a bad center bushing on the drive shaft that you are feeling misaligning itself as it stops spinning but you would also feel that on take-off as it realigns itself under restart.<br><br>Other thing to check is if a front shock is hanging up under compresion then breaking free as the weight transfers during a stop.<br><br>Or it could be something completely different.......... ???

OS, sorry, I did not notice that you had a 2X4, so no track bar. However as redramnc and Horse Hauler said. It could be one or more of those things. I am sure the problem is in your suspension. Still think the front more than the back.<br>Keep us posted.

Thanks a bunch, Guys. Just got home from work and all this input waiting for me. Thanks again. The front shocks are Rancho 3000 and they are just a year old. Hope its not them. So I will check everything that has been mentioned and I should be getting back within a week. Hopefully.<br><br>But I like all the input, its a way of stimulating my mind. <br><br>Oh Sick

I posted this topic on July the 5th and it carried through to July 25th. Got a lot of input as to what the cause might be, but I think I just found out the reason and here it is Aug 19th. I have a request to post my findings when it became apparent.

I'll prolly get laughed out of town or flamed something terrible.

My truck does the same thing and what it is, is the tranny shifting into 1st gear after the stop. The tranny shifts to 2nd at about 3 mph with light to medium throttle so even at a very slow "walking speed" you are in 2nd and when you put the brakes on you stop quickly and you feel the tranny go to 1st. To check this out, put the gear shift in first, get up a little speed then stop. See if you feel the "second" stop. If you do - I'm wrong again. :-[ :-[

OK Bearfoot and Westcoaster I'll check that out, but believe me...........the spline is sloppy, too sloppy. And that will have to be fixed soon.

Westcoster..........Well ! I must say putting the tranny in neutral when coming to a stops sure made a difference. Plus, it shot my theory about the drive line spline being the cause. So! when stopping in neutral everything is A-OK.
Then what you are saying is the problem is in the tranny. The fact that it is shifting almost at a stop.
