Re:Mailbox Bashing?

Same thing here. If you put up a fortified mailbox, then you are liable if anyone gets hurt when they run into it. I wouldn't doubt that some punk could also sue you if he broke his arm bashing it.

When I put mine up, I thought about taking a ball bat to it right then, and depriving them of the pleasure.

There's the incentive to stick it out through winter...

As many RVs as I have seen going south lately you should have the state all to your self-this winter. But I’ll bet that south Texas is full of snowbirds. The only bad thing about seeing them on the road is that most of them should not be driving at all much less a Trailer or motor home. Seen one the other day that was driving 45 in a 70 mile zone while looking over the wheel, and I’m not sure if he could see the white lines.

Re:Mailbox Bashing?

Well I got to start my day. It’s raining here so I can’t mow the yard (darn) but I’ll pull the truck into the barn and clean the inside. It really needs it between hunting and work it looks like a boar’s den.

Re:Mailbox Bashing?

I had that problem. But I got even. My new mail box is made of 5" diameter .25" thick pipe for the base, it also has 2 re-bar pegs about 6" long sticking out from the base about 1 foot up from the bottom( to help anchor it). The top is .25" thick pipe about 12" in diameter that is welded to the base pipe, it also has a very durable .25" thick door. All put in about 2 foot deep concrete. Within a week I saw that my address stickers on the side had some scratches in them. ;D

4x4
P.S. It would almost take a tank to knock it over.

Re:Mailbox Bashing?

Get some drill pipe, some half inch plate, a cutting torch, a box of welding rods and the front cover off a regular mail box, put it all together = broken bats.

Re:Mailbox Bashing?

Yes, I certainly have considered using .250 pipe for this application. I have also thought about putting a post or two of the 4" pipe in the ground on either side of the mailbox, fill them with concrete and paint them yellow. This would be like the barrier posts you see in front of buildings to prevent vehicles from entering.
I did find a couple of places on the net that say they have indestructible mailboxes.

Re:Mailbox Bashing?

I used .500 thick wall pipe, 10in dia. welded back and door on it and put a flag on it from old mailbox. I cant wait for some dumbbutt to hit it with an aluminum bat!!! I used 3in dia. pipe for base but just put a little concrete at base so it CAN be knocked over. I agree that box bashing should not be a capitol offence. (I maybe used to do it myself) :

Re:Mailbox Bashing?

There actually was a case near here where a kid broke his arm hitting a concrete mailbox with a bat. His parents successfully sued the homeowner. Disgusting, but true. The kid paid a couple hundred to replace the mailbox, and the homeowner had to pay medical restitution.

Big problem I saw was that the intent was obvious. The homeowner had fortified the mailbox to protect it and made it worse by admitting it. Any act that endangers people to protect property is illegal.

Here's the gray area. If the construction looks decorative, intent becomes questionable. Doesn't mean you couldn't be sued, but might make it more difficult. So, if you do fortify the mailbox, make it look like you were doing it for asthetics. Big brick mailboxes don't get touched around here. The kids realize they're gonna get hurt and just go look for an easier target. And I've never heard of anyone here getting hassled for having one.
