Looking for a ............

wheel. 16 x 8 factory aluminum. 2001.5, 2500 QC Sport, 8 hole.
Got a small crack where one of the wheel weights was.
Can the wheel be welded?
If so, whats the alloy? Our guys can do 6061 and 7071 T6 all day.

It could be welded, but the only persons opinion I would trust on material is the manufacturer. Since its a forged aluminum, its probably a T6. get the wrong alloy and you could propagate the crack.

Sounds like its time for some bling bling wheels...

Uh ... Bruce is definately NOT the bling-bling type !! (like nipple rings on a nun !!)

Kinda depends on where the crack is situated on the rim. If I was gonna try a repair I would definately drill the ends before welding to stop the crack from spreading.

What were you doing to cause the crack ??

The closest thing to spinners might be like what I had on my '66 Mustang. Chrome reverse and baby moons don't sound bad.
Crack is about 3/8"/8mm long. Judging from the appearance, it's been there a while. Did talk with some of my airframe and T6 can be welded, with the proper tools.
Coffee's ready. No fufu juice, good old Luzianne.

For awhile, the factory alloy wheels were well known for cracking.

I don't know the years but it was the early years of the 2nd Gen alloys. Tire shops around here had nightmares finding replacements.

There was one for sale in the classifieds.

Problem exists with all of them.
Even the 2002 alloys will crack if you tow extra heavy or overload the bed on a regular basis.

A nice forged aftermarket wheel will fix that problem, or if you aren't into "bling", a nice set of stock steel wheels won't have the problem.
