let's do a "do you remember when" thread...
How was the ride in that IH just east of Cascade Locks where the slide area is? It's not so bad now but a few+ decades ago it was a bit rougher. I remember going into Portland with my uncle in his Dart and hitting that spot. As we got closer to it, us kids would talk him into speeding up so that as we hit that area we would come off the seat's. Lots of fun for a car load of kids.
As no one has yet to mention them. How about candy cigarettes and bubble gum cigars (and not the ITSA! kind)?
And there must be a case of CRS running amongst us as people have mentioned only having a few TV channels and no remotes. How can any one forget the National Anthem at sign off followed by the all night ant races??
Oh, and Benny Hill??

Here is a few to add to what the members have already posted:
"Do You Remember When...................???"
Riots were unthinkable.
The flag was a sacred symbol.
You weren't afraid to go out at night.
Clerks and repairmen tried to please you.
People expected less and valued what they had more.

phloop i know the section of hwy you are talking about but we only traveled it maybe twice a year. i do remember the umitilla end of the hwy being built. we drove about twenty miles or so on the gravel before they had it paved then they would shoot you up on the old loop to loop "scenic" hwy. before we had the int. travelall we used to ride in the homemade plywood canopy dad made. mom dad and my little sister up front us four boys in the back. four hundred miles one way. my brother rigged up a intercom phone to talk to the folks in the cab.
I remember when people used to be proud to be American and hung flags up and supported our military and president and wanted to go nuke Iraq. Oh wait, that was only back at september 11th......no everyone just talks trash and whines about Bush and us being involved with Iraq. Ok, not "everyone", but the "majority" of the media and people that the media shows.
Anyhow, I remember when one didn't always need to be so dang "politically correct"! Now everything you say or do can land you with a lawsuit! I remember when it was California, and now it's Commie-fornia, I remember when "the governator" was an actor, I remember when you could smoke in bars, I remember fundip, and jawbreakers, denim jackets, rolling up the cuffs on your pants, MC hammer pants, tall tube socks with stripes, when jeeps were cheap, when trucks were cheaper than cars, ....oh man, I could go on forever! Those were the days!

Don't ask why this warped old mind remembers it like it was yesterday. Just one of those things.
