8 Track tapes were the biggest thing to happen. TV remote control? Ppphh yeh right-when the old man wanted it done, I was the remote. And, it was B&W for as long as I remember.
The only thing "Gone Wild" on tv was Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom.
Jack Benny & Carson-still the funniest in my book.
No seatbelts, rotary phones, having to remember how many times to pump without flooding (of course each vehicle was different).
A snow storm was just that..A STORM! Not measured in inches but feet.
Going to cut our own Xmas tree in Pop's ol panel truck. There should be a law on fake trees......

Wink Yes INDEED!! some great things...

LOVE the music groups SHORTROUND!! can go on and on....amazed at Hendricks..rolled my eyes at the neighbor girls who screamed and fainted at Elvis-oh brother..

YES, could name all the cars on the street; that's a good one! those 60s cars were classic art too! first car here was a hand painted 64 Ford Falcon. we used to go to the 'new' self service pumps and drain the gas outta all the hoses for about five gallons. then hang out and check oil or wash windows/do tire pressure to make up for not paying for gas. work ethics and morals , what even happened to them???!!!

since I played with GI joes, LOVED that cartoon that was like a comic book-
ahhh Honji... Bandit was the bulldog... Johnny Danger? I can see it...
Superman was in black and white. Cronkite WAS everyones newsman.

biggest screw up that i could get back? mad at a boyfriend for leaving his unregistered car in a parking lot (he had no job) a 68 red camaro convertible
650 holley and stainless header exhaust..it got towed and I had to pay for it out of police impound, 65 bucks. that was a LOT of money then, I called the first tow company in the book and sold the car for seventy bucks if they could get there in ten minutes. (I didn't have a place for it) they got there in five with the tires smoking. car only needed a thermostat. boy that haunts me.... funniest car? unibody Ford pinto that went two ways on a turn cause it rusted out fast. we put people who mooched rides in the back...

yes, McDonald's advertised hundreds sold then the technology of lighted displays gave them an actual count at a restaurant. when it REALLY had two golden arches as part of the building. Friday night basketball games, my dad
came to after working two jobs, 3 would eat there for less than ten bucks.
and I AM NOT AS OLD AS DAVEY!! (dssimecek) and better looking than 04CTD
which actually stands for "04 and Counting To Death"

army uniform was "cords", OD green side button nylon pants, hip length button down nylon shirt with pockets at the bottom front. any blood made it turn black. late seventies we wore what the men wore, yeah- super starched cotton shirt and pants. I had to go to EBay to find the Gen Maxwell hat (like Castro wore) but it meant a lot to me to have it.
MY MOM never learned to drive- didn't want to. streetcars and city busses. favorite memory was standing inside her fur coat at a COLD buffalo bus stop going downtown to shop for Christmas, seeing all the window displays with animated stuff. if you behaved well, and were patient; you got a BLT sandwhich at the store lunch counter AND when done, got to pick out a ten cent toy. (big plastic parachute guy)

I really hope my son will miss me like I appreciate and miss my parents...
gosh that generation (1920 birth) worked soooo hard.....

I remember when steam trains came through town. They were so huge and noisy and shook the ground .

The bread man came around every week to the farm in a panell truck selling bread and cake and stuff.

We kept the milk and butter in a pail on the end of a long rope down the well to keep them cool.

my job every day [one of them ] was to clean the glass chinmys of the coal oil lamps.

We had a one room school for grade one to grade eight. Maybe sixteen kids in all.

Only got to town on Saturday nights..

My first car was a 49 Ford. Paid $75.00 for it used...very used..

Got my drivers license and test from the man that ran the local gas station....

I remember when a man was as good as his word: computers rate him now and his voice is never heard.

I'm not as ancient as some of the folks on here, but here's some of the stuff I remember being able to do, see, buy, etc etc.
Having a car with an 8 track player, and being able to buy 8 tracks for it. Good ones, like AC/DC and George Carlin.
$0.84.9 a gallon gas.
Everybody who's folks weren't loaded drove stuff from the '70s or older at high school. My friends and I bought our own cars and trucks, and they probably weren't worth 2 grand between the 6 of 'em.
4 channels on tv (we had a public broadcast channel)
When NASCAR wasn't cool.
Having an antenna instead of cable.
Being "uptown" because we had a power antenna.
People actually rode Greyhound.
Riding a Greyhound.
Cabooses.
Fax machines that curled the paper.
Going to the school office and some poor secretary cranking the mimeograph machine for all it was worth.
Penny candy.
The only place in the school being air conditioned was the office.

That's all I'm good for off hand, I'm sure somebody else that's 30 or so will fill in for me.

Milk was delievered early in the morning in glass bottles with cardboard stoppers. With about an inch of cream on the top. Also delievered orange juice, butter cottage cheese and other daily products.

Helms Bakery delievered door to door, bread, donuts, and anything pastry.
And it was fresh.

Good Humor trucks.

What I remember,

-Star Wars opening in 1977 and my Aunt taking me and my cousin
-Sitting in front of the Tv in late 1979 hoping Ronald Reagan did not get elected, worried about him nuking the world.
-Captain Kangaroo on days I was sick from school
-Watching Hee-Haw with my Grandparents who I miss dearly
-standing outside the AV room in Jr high school watching the clips of the shuttle disaster the day it happened.
-paying .79 cents a gallon for gas on the reservation and pack of smokes less than a $1.50
-The day they said we may be going to Iraq (Gulf War)
-The day the towers fell

On the lighter side

-1980 Olympics when the USA beat the mighty Russians!!
-Watching Wayne Greztky retire....still the best hockey player IMHO
-The day I stepped off the bus onto the REAL Parris Isand and thinking to myself......what have I done?? 3rd Battalion...still the best!! Ooh-Rah!!
-Graduating from boot camp and our "heavy" calling me a Marine and being able to call him Sgt and have a real conversation with him.

This is a great thread!!!

i remember:

the old "brick" cell phones

gas was less than 1.00 and diesel was cheaper than that

when my family first got cable

286 computers

9600 modems

when it took almost a week to beat a video game instead of hours

when the only thing that had to do with crack was avoiding stepping on one, so you didnt break mother's back

when "cops and robbers" was a kids game played using our fingers as guns, instead of real guns.

My favorite trucking tv show was "Cannonball " . For my kids it was "Movin On " . The actually got to climb in Will's KW when it was at a KW dealer open house in Little Rock . How about 15 cent McDonald's hamburgers ? NASCAR was really stock cars . A track near my house had a class for flathead Fords . Parris Island DI's really made men with liberal use of the boot and backhand . Don't get me going on P.I. . Black flag ? Isn't that some kind of insecticide ? No , they didn't have that . Not with all those sand fleas . Do they still have Maggie's drawers ?

When gas stations sold "regular and unleaded" gasoline.

I could tell you stories about boot camp at PI, but as I learned, what goes on in the house, stays in the house.

Aw come on . You don't have to identify names or units or anything . Tell them about when the few , the proud REALLY meant that . Not meaning any disrespect to today's recruits . They'd probably agree training would be better if tougher . IMHO opinion the first thing a recruiter should do is slap somebody in the side of the head and call him a maggot . If he has a problem with that don't let the door hit him (you know ) on his way out .

I remember when you could play outside all day and nobody came looking for you as long as you were home when the street lights came on. I remember when ANY adult would ****** you by the ear if you acted out of line... it didn't have to be your parent and nobody got upset about it because you deserved it. I remember when a piece of bazooka bubble gum was the prize for being good in the barber chair and you could read the comic on the way home. I remember when we didn't have to flip through 300 channels to find something good to watch and it was a good thing because we had to actually get out of our chair and walk across the room to change the channel.. I remember when pong was the state of the art videogame and if you got hungry you could set the paddle just right and the game would still be playing when you got back from making a sandwich. I remember when the price for being a jerk at school was getting paddled in front of everybody. I remember when music was happy and was about love and natures beauty and it relaxed your soul. I remember when you had to hold the phone receiver by the cord upside down while all of the tangles spun their way out of it. I remember when arabs were just a funny part of the plot in old black and white movies.

I remember when I used to think that my parents were "Superheroes" because they knew simple math and how to pay bills. I remember when I DIDN'T have ANY bills. I rememeber when playing hide and seek in my best buddy's basement was the scariest/funnest thing in the world. When putting quarters in the "Super Mario Bros" arcade game was a weekend special. When gas cost $0.69 per gallon (that is when I was about 5...I am just good at remembering numbers). When you address your elders/seniors as "ma'am" or "sir" and treated EVERYBODY worth it with respect or you got slapped in the mouth and didn't have social services on your side (poor parents and not having much of a leg to stand one with raising kids these days) When I got my driver's license and felt like I was the new man of the house...like I had just earned my freedom. And creeks/rivers couldn't shake me, my fishing pole and hounds off them for those 2 days of the week that started with "S"
