Wink Good Thread 04!

adam's sour apple gum, blackjack gum and my Mom would send me to the neighborhood store for a pack of Chesterfield Kings for a dime. the milkman and vegetable wagon with the italian guy who also would sharpen your knives
president kennedy's death, watching my Mom cry at Nixon's impeachment. crying myself when Green Grissom and White got burned on the launchpad.
growing up in both the city and the country where people loved you and all your neighbors knew who you were and where you were supposed to be.
and you got in trouble from everyone of them if you did something wrong at one end of the block..learning that people could hate you for the color of your skin. working at a maximum security state prison ...for 8,000 a year.

being the neighborhood house where kids in trouble could come to and hide from the police or their parents. watching my Mom talk with the police or parents after settling the kid down, feeding him (her) and play a board game or have them listen to a story and help them read it.

using your imagination, playing with GI joes (yeah I 'm a girl) then growing up to marry one. (no jungle missions though)

figuring out things on paper- my son goes right to his computer...

man, I am depressed now; and I am not even as old as Davey!! lol

Going out on a date and filling up the Mustang, going to a movie, and eating at the Old South for less than $20.
CCR, the Who, Moody Blues, Kingston Trio, Simon and Garfunkel, the Brothers Four, Deep Purple.
WestPacs, PCOD, getting paid cash on payday, MPC, Bauamuba(?) Beer, R&R in Australia, Mary's on Tu Douh(?) Street, the Horse and Cow Bar, Pearl City Tavern, the Blue Kangaroo.
Coasties teaching us small boat operations for riverine warfare.
The intermingling smells of diesel, amine, and lithium bromide.
How half a bottle of Old Spice DID NOT cover up the above smells.
The sights on the pier, when looking up from the deck after returning from a WestPac, of what the ladies were and were not wearing.
All cotton utilities/fatigues with starched cover/hat.

I remember when Willard Scott was Ronald McDonald, and going to McD's was a special treat.
....Waking up in the morning and all I had to do was make my bed and put the dirty clothes in the hamper, ....everything else was somebody else's chore.
.....Sending DAYS looking through the The Sears Christmas Wishbook.

yep - those were the days of innocence, all you to do was be good, and MAYBE Mom would take you to McD's for a TREAT.

some good posts.

short - remember wearing an EAB (emer air breathing mask) for ~6 hours because we were snorkeling and driving into our smoke.

any SSBN guys remember that amine & diesel fume funk that would permeate your clothes, and most guys had 2 sets of skivvies, one for boat (permanent smell) and one for off crew?

I remember when recruits were REALLY trained on PI.
I remember when Copenhagen was $2.20 a can, and gas was $.99 a gal.
I remember when all I needed to be happy was a pair of post hole diggers and a dip of snuff.
I remember when a man's word was his bond, and a handshake was a contract.
I remember when I did not have 3 screaming kids, and could come and go as I please.

Things that I don't remember because I was not there...

When God said, "Let there be light!" and 04CTD hit the switch for him.
When the wise men were following the Star, 04CTD gave them directions.

100,000 comedians out of work, and here I am...

I remember when...

Going to the grocery store when dad got paid and the trunk was full.

Ice cream was a treat.

We had nuclear bomb drills at school.

Full service meant just that, full service.

Going to the Chrysler garage with my dad and hanging out.

I thought I would marry and grow old with my high school sweet heart.

I remember when TV was watched for a specific program, not for channel surfing because we were bored. Besides, how much surfing could be done with only 3 channels anyway?

Heck, I remember when TV was just TV, not a game you could play with!

I remember when staying inside meant all day boredom.

04,
Yep. Rode boomers, fast attack, and smoke boats and spent a bit of time on 165 footers running the rivers and coastline of Vietnam.
Funny thing tho, each boat had its own unique smells.
Those were the days.

I remember the Gene Autrey Cowboy Club and the oath you had to sign to be a member...My Roy Rodgers pearl handled cap-gun six-shooters and matching winchester.....came with a set of real leatherette chaps and a straw hat and spurs....

3 channels on good days, IF someone wold hold the aluminum foil in just the right spot on teh anttena...

Rat Patrol, Roy Rodgers, The Rifleman and Lone Ranger...Flipper, Lassie and timmy falling down the well again....

GI Joe was still 10 inches tall and fighting WWII and Veitnam...and winning...even before he had a kung-foo grip

Remember sitting around with my High School buddies arguing whether it was right to go to Canada or serve if drafted.....

Diesel was around $0.29 a gallon and $10 was a tank of gas and a bottle of Jack Black....

Disco's were cool, and trying to learn how to "Do the Hustle"( which I never did learn....)

Air raid drills, segregated playgrounds at school, white only drinking fountains..

First computer NASA built.."UNIVAC" was the contractor... bigger than a house and run by vacum tubes, only did basic math..punch cards, binary and helping my dad program math problems by plugging big wires with RCA jacks into pegboard squares that were the "circuit boards" of the day.....
