Two men going about daily lives caught in gang violence

SURREY - At first glance, they have little in common.
On Friday afternoon, Ed Schellenberg, a 55-year-old father of two from Abbotsford, was hard at work, servicing gas fireplaces at a Whalley apartment. When the job was almost complete, he allowed a family member who was helping him to go home while he finished up in Suite 1505.
That same afternoon, Chris Mohan, a 22-year-old student who lived down the hall, had plans to play basketball with friends in Burnaby, but somehow found himself caught in Suite 1505.
Pastor Jim Penner called Ed Schellenberg a friend who was caught in circumstances that spun out of control.

Supt. Wayne Rideout, head of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, confirmed yesterday that both Schellenberg and Mohan were innocent victims when they were murdered along with four other men in the small Surrey apartment.
"These men were going about their daily lives on Friday when they became the victims of gang violence, solely as a result of where they were at in a single moment in time," Rideout said.
The apartment was used in the drug trade, and four of the victims were known to have engaged in criminal activity.
In addition to Schellenberg and Mohan, the dead included brothers Corey Lal, 21, and Michael Lal, 26, Edward Narong, 22, and Ryan Bartolomeo, 19, all of Surrey.
Lower Mainland RCMP District Cmdr. Peter German called the murders an "outrageous act of violence perpetrated on individuals, at least two of whom were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time."
While it is unlikely Schellenberg and Mohan had ever met before Friday afternoon, both will be deeply missed by families now sharing feelings of shock and grief.
"Ed was a deeply-loved husband, brother and father to many," Jim Penner, pastor of Immanuel Fellowship Baptist Church in Abbotsford, said yesterday, reading from a statement prepared by Schellenberg's family.
"He lived to enjoy God's nature in camping, hiking, fishing, hunting and stargazing."
Penner said Schellenberg, who was a friend, did his job well and was "caught in circumstances that spun out of control, ending in his death because of where he needed to be to do his job."
He leaves behind a wife and a son and daughter in their late teens.
Shiris Nand, Mohan's cousin, said the family remains in "a state of shock and disbelief."
Mohan has one sister. By yesterday afternoon, 150 people had joined one of two Facebook sites dedicated to his memory.
"Just want to say that you were one of a kind Mohan," reads one posting.
"I am so grateful I was able to hang out with you one last time a couple of weeks back: You were your cheery self. Through all the years, I have not once seen you without that glowing smile on your face. Your death was tragic, but you[r] life, though be it short, was truly inspirational.
"Be sure to teach those people up in heaven a thing or two about basketball . . . You will truly be missed and you will never be forgotten."
Both families asked for privacy while they grieve.

Crime here in B.C is getting worse year after year we got to try harder to stop those idiots. We should take a lesson from the states and bring in the three strikes and your gone to prison for good. And if the goofy government tries to compline that it is to expensive to house those criminals for that length of time. Then I say we should contract the prison system to the Mexican government, I am sure they will deal with them and will all ways have or make room for more.....I should stop now...
