Insurance for jet skis
Insurance for jet skis
I'm thinking about getting some jet skis, and someone told my wife that you need to insure them, is this true for Califorina. I've looked on the DMV web site and I can't find anything about needing to provide insurance for a jet ski.
Does any one know if it is required or not.

I live in Indiana and Have two waverrunners and we have to insure them both. It is classified under watervehicle insurance. i am very sure that you will have to insure them. What kind of waverunners are you looking at. I have a 2004 yahmaha XLT 1200, goes about 70 on flat smooth water. Blast to drive!
Isn't there a hunting season on jet skis? I've heard there is no limit or size restriction
. Seriously I know of no insurance requirement on a Federal level. Check with CA's equivalent to Games and Fishing Department. Each state is different.

I will say the difference between a Sea-doo and a Yamaha is Sea-doos have smaller engines that run higher RPM while Yahamas have bigger engines at ower RPM. Sea-doos do look nice but we got a very good deal on our waverunner. It all comes down to where you are buying it from and the price. Make sure you get it from a very good dealer that will treat you right. When you get it titled which you have to do each year like a car you have to have insurance on it. I think it is a flat fee, it all depends on the company you choose.
I say insure EVERYTHING even if the state doesn't require it.... Lets say that you happen to do something foolish (or your buddy using your ski) and someone besides yourself gets hurt.... unlsee you have the $$$ to cover the law suit get the INS.

Here in Ar. we have to carry at least liability insurance on Jet Ski's. I believe that I paid around $10 a month for mine.
You will be happy with the Sea Doo. We had a 2001 GTX and it was great. It would do 72 MPH with the right water conditions.

That GTX is prety sweet. I know if yoiu realy want a bad boy Honda just came out with a twin turbo 2 seater. I say buy the 2 sea-doos with trailer. That is a crazy deal. Our Yahmaha was around 9k new but we traded in our older one that the factory labled lemon ( had a engine mount defect that kept blowing engins) that knocked it down a lot. I think 2 is a good idea. It is fun to drive but the down side is you cannot go out after dusk and cant party on them or cruz around like a boat. I know you will have fun with them!
Not a big fan of the polaris. a friend was a dealer could give away the jet skis. Plus they are very ugly. If you like them it is your choice. Stick with the big name companies. No Tigersharks they are complete crap. Good luck on your choice.
They dont even make Polaris jetski's anymore. If your buying New, sea-doo has the fastest model the RXP or the RXT would be good (they have the same engine in them) and the engine has proven to be good or go with the Kawi 15f. 4 Strokes are the way to go now. As for insuring it, in my case i am the only one who really uses it and dont feel the need for it but if you are letting friends use it then it might be a good idea. just my 2 cents Jamie
One thing to remember when waverunner shopping; It's all about the warranty...
when they break, and they will, its at least a few hundred bucks to get it back out of the shop.
With something like a waverunner, where the common practice is to beat on them, buying used can often lead to buying 'someone elses problem'.
I'd say pony up a few extra dollars for the newer (low hour) ones or other wise you'll pay out the difference in repair costs eventually. Plus toys are no fun when they're not working...
