How much weight can you put in the bed?

I know what the book says but how much weight have any of you actually put in the bed of the truck without feeling like you were going to overload it or break something?

I don't know how much weight it will hold safely, but I can tell you my 3500 bed is jacked up pretty bad on the inside. Looks like the previous owner loaded a skid-steer on tracks in the bed. Support channels are flattened, bed has about a 4-6 inch dip, and inside fenders are punctured.

Got a pretty good deal on the truck cuz of the damage. Bedliner and toolbox hides the damage pretty good.

If you got to haul a real heavy load, if you can't load it even, try placing a sheet of plywood or something down first to help spread the load.

My truck has the towing and camper package and I can put 2500 lbs with no sweat. 2500 lbs also makes a good leveling kit.
2500 lbs = 50-60 sacks of fertilizer
a pallet of bricks
a real good jag of green firewood
75 sheets of 4x8 security caging
your momma in law
Top
beer for the weekend
all the grandkids w/pet goats

The truck will haul more than your back wants to unload. I think the load of hickory I took rossn2 weighed around 1500 lbs. Sure made the truck ride smooth.

NOTE: No animals were injured during the loading process. The goats were inside the cab, in properly designed and PETA tested goat seats, and buckled in. The two legged kids were riding in the bed.

First, I have one of those cheap, black plastic tool boxes in the bed of mine to hold things I need on trips - it's about 4' wide, 2' deep, and 2' high. It doesn't take up much room, but sometimes it's in the way.
Since I was building a 28 x 24 foot workshop for my old Terraplane, about 5 weeks ago I went to Home Depot and had them load

30 16' long 2x10s
30 12' long 2x10s
10 4x8 sheets of 7/16 waferboard

All of this in One load.

Someone estimated I had around 4,000 lbs in the bed. I drove home at about 40 - 45 mph, the truck sagged a bit in the rear, but the engine & tranny didn't know anything was back there. And yes, I had flags back there.

I have no idea how heavy the load was, but the previous owner of my house had a fetish for rocks around the trees and flowers. I threw a few in the bed and the muffler on my factory exhaust was hitting the u-joint yoke on the rear axle.

6 round bales 2 different times. 45-50 mph any more and the front wanted to float. Only had to go about 8 miles. 5 would have been more cozy. Couple yards of gravel squats her good too.

I have 2 yards of playground bark sitting in mine right now.

Didn't even move the bed down when they guy was dumping it in.

Smoothed out the ride a bit.

No idea what it weighs.

2 yards of bed sand. Bumpstops were sitting on the rear axle. Had 40 square bales on hay piled on there. Didn't even budge it.

I'm not condoning this, I'm just saying it's been done.............. and done on a regular basis too.

The Crop protection company I used to work for had an 01 3500 with a 12' flatbed.

They used to reugularily load 4 metric tonnes of fertilizer on pallets.

ie. 8800 lbs. + 4 hardwood pallets

Yep, that mader her squat a bit.

6600 lbs (3 skids) wasn't nearly as bad.

Wasn't uncommon to hook a spreader behind that load as well loaded with 8 metric tonnes. ie. 17600 lbs, + speader so probably in the neighbourhood of 20,000 lbs

all in all, load would be near 30,000
