HDTV calibration?

i just bought a new tv. its a samsung 40" lcd 1080 whatever. big jump from my 20" tube. im not really into gadgets and stuff so im kind of lost. talking to the guy at best buy he tried to sell me a tv calibration for $300. but i would have to let the tv play for about 100 hours before i got it done. sounded cool but $300 cool, i dont know. next stop circuit city to compare prices. asked about the calibration and they said $129 and it could be dont right after i brought it home. next on to con's. the guy there said i could buy a cd from target and do the same thing for like $20. is what best buy and circuit city offering the same as the cd from target but they just do it for you? also do i even need to do this or is it a waste of money? thanks for the help. they were claming extended life, less energy, better color and picture. will i see a difference?

Never heard of a tv calibration. I have had Direct TV for many years and went HDTV over a year ago with a Sony LCD. Nothing was said about installing something called tv calibration. Sounds to me like they just want your money. You need to research this further.

Skip the professional calibration and pick up a DVD called Digital Video Essentials. It will walk you through setting up your TV to get the best picture possible. Well worth the time and money.

When I bought my HDTV from Circuit City, they gave me the calibration disk. Did not see any difference after I ran it than before though.
