Happy Winter Solstice

More precisely, winter solstice will take place at 12:47 pm EST (1747 GMT) on Dec. 21. It is a date that will also mark the shortest day and longest night

Yet as the old wise man once said, it truly is darkest before the dawn. After December 21, the light slowly begins its inevitable return, and the days begin to grow blessedly longer, flipping the switch to ON for the inevitable countdown to spring ...

And even though time has been passing rather quickly, this one hasn't come soon enough.

Soon begins the long slide into summer.

solstice fun and games

Now for all of you "I gotta try this" kinds. Did you know that you can balance an unboiled raw egg on the fat end today????? Give it a try. Then later, as the azimuth of the earth changes, the egg will fall over on its own. You can try to re-balance but it will be for naught, until the next solstice in the spring....

So go forth ye young egg posters, get your egg up and awe you friends and family with your prowess of old world charm......

Gary

So went home and tried this with the kids. Sure enough, I did get one egg out of 7 left in a carton to balance. Left it there. 9 year old is watching it like a hawk.

im good Marc, just enjoying this balmy winter. I get a great inversion, generally at least 20 warmer than the valley, plus air that isn' t cancerous.

Inversion is nice. I'm on the wrong end of it.

I don't buy off on the cancerous air thing. Wood smoke is going to happen. Be it from a wood stove or a 5 million acre fire.

Aren't you suppose to whack the egg with a hammer while the person is staring intently?

The 9 year old would cry, the 6 year old would laugh and the 4 year old would ask if he could eat it.

You know, the egg is still standing there. I told the wife I'm not eating it as there must be something wrong with the chick inside there. I think it just must of had enough calcium on the end of it to balance it or something. I couldn't get the other 6 left in the carton to balance at all. I will have to google it now and see if I had my leg pulled.
