Happy Birthday Rudy!
Rudolph Diesel was born on this day (March 18th) in 1858. Happy 148th, Rudy! That's going to be one big cake.
"Diesel was especially interested in using coal dust or vegetable oil as fuel for the engine, but this never materialized in any major way, at least until recent rises in fuel prices and concerns about Oil reserves lead to more widespread use of Vegetable Oil and Bio Diesel - most Diesel engines will function just as well using either. But the primary source of fuel has been what became known as diesel fuel, an Oil biproduct derived from the refining of petroleum."
Here's an interesting article on him: http://www.answers.com/topic/rudolf-diesel

Rudolph Diesel: One of the Greatest Inventors Ever.
Diesel's name is probably one of the most widespread names on the planet. I'd bet that Diesel is a word known to more people than Lennon and The Beatles. If making a name for yourself is what makes a man great, Diesel is the greatest man since Jesus Christ (and maybe greater). And the other great thing about Diesel is that he never intended to label his engine with his name, either.

Clessie Cummins is a character as well.

He'd have done something with his name, Diesel or not. Millions of people know of the name "Cummins".
