Then when the pan gets full you can just turn off the valve while you empty the pan. Both my trucks have one.
Both my trucks are 4x4 so lately I have been putting one of those square plastic cat litter containers under it, since it fits under there. All the oil fits in there. If you have to go out and buy cat litter to get the container, that's OK, you can use the litter to absorb all that oil you spilled the first time around. (get the cheapest stuff that comes in a plastic container, it will absorb better)

Yeah, that's the one I put in last time I changed my oil, so I'm waiting to use it. About another 1,000 miles and I'll know how it works. I bought mine directly from Fumoto Valve, www.fumotovalve.com , because I happened to have a 25% off coupon from them.

I was emptying my jeeps oil and had the pan on a stool that was just the same size. cleanest oil change i ever had . till i bumped the stool and it went all over my parents garage floor. I believe in the red blurry minutes afterwards i renounced my faith and religion among other things. sometimes the bad just piles up. At least its easier to put it back in than to take it out.
(oh and my religion and faith are true once again... like you care!)

Nah, neber done that! Although, I DID find out that there is a demonstrably finite amount of additional FRESH oil a drain pan can hold AFTER it had been filled to 85% full with black used toyota diesel oil!!!
The bad thing was I didn't realize it was going where it shouldn't until the very last jug of Delo 400 was tipped into the little 4banger's filler spout...
I then looked down thru the engine compartment wondering where that fresh oil on the concrete was leaking from...

One thing I've never done is:
Forget to put the drain plug back after draining the old oil before filling my motorcycle with new oil.

Okay, I did it "once".

Ive got that same pan.(who ever makes them must be rich at this point) I was nervouse the first time and stuck the plug back in before it ran all over. i got good and dirty but dident spill any. Had to ramove and reinsert plug a few times before it was empty. Directly after draining the pan I took a 3/8 drill and made swiss cheese of the opening. no more problems

I remember a post on another "similar sounding" site, where a member posted that he had finished changing his oil, screwed the caps back on the drain pan, got distracted, came out & climbed into the truck, then backed out running over his drain pan in the process.
I believe he described it as "popping like a huge zit", spreading 3 gallons of used oil over the underside of his truck and his driveway.

Years ago we did this at the race track with our top fuel dragster. The driver was supposed to handle changing the oil and packing the chutes. He started the oil change with the too small oil pan and dropped 4 qts of 60wt Penz full of nitro on the ground then forgot the drain plug inthe pan and added 12 qts of fresh 60 wt Penz. It's amazing how much ground 12 qts of oil can cover in a couple minutes especially after you walk around in it

Dredging this one up to dispense a little tip, since so many people seem to have this same drain pan. I found out this weekend that a Rotella gallon jug lid fits the spout end perfectly. Saved me having to stick my hand in the half-full 5 gallon bucket to retrieve the lid when I dropped it in there.

My apologies if I was the only one who didn't know this little tidbit.

I'm pretty sure he's not talking about me... . Its not my fault, that darn drain plug causes the oil to "spray" in an un-uniforn fashion. I've been through numerous towels, t-shifts, and a painter's sheet. All which ended up being tossed in the trash...

I'll post the pics as soon as they get approved.

My first consisted of a 5 gallon bucket with the top still on it, a rather large (I thought) funnel in the hole. Man did that funnel fill up fast !! Now I have found a pan that holds about four to five gallons and is wide open on top with a pour spout on the side for that five gallon bucket I still have with the top on it.
