Good used Diesel Auto/SUV

I'm thinking of selling my S-10 Blazer and buying something else in a diesel. What are you all's opinions on diesel AUTO's or SUV's? I want something about 8-10 years old or even older cause I can't afford that much and I like fixer uppers.

Well, what are the options for things available domestically?

Excursions (expensive), Liberties (expensive), Volkswagons (uber-expensive), Mercedes (cheap- but they get expensive), and the old 6.5 liter and 6.2 liter Chevy Blazers and Suburbans (cheap).

Not much options that I can think of; I guess there's a reason why Cummins swaps are so popular.

OK, Anyone know of a 4BT swap kit? I'd really go for that. The old 4.3L V-6 has 200k on it and my CTD gets better mileage. Not to mention the idle problem I haven't been able to figure out yet.

my girlfriend wanted something to replace her 96 grand cherokee, and I wanted it to be diesel, she found a VERY nice 05 VW golf turbo diesel 5spd with lots of options for somewhere around 20grand. only had 19k on it. we love it, 40 mpg, plenty of power, just not a whole lot of interior space, not like the jeep had. just my .02

I am in the process of selling my 92 non turbo VW golf diesel, it has over 300,000 kms on it. It is a very simple car for the layman to work on having No computers. IT needs minor work but runs fine with new timing belt.
Replaced it with a brand new 2006 golf TDI GLS PD, wow what a difference.

I'd give my eye teeth for an older Mercedes E320 CDI.

I'd give my eye teeth AND part of male anatomy for a new one

0-60 in 6.6 and 37mpg while in the lap of luxury? SIGN ME UP!

Too bad a new one is $50k+ and I can't afford one.

caught me off guard at first but I suppose 1 out of 2 would still get the job done. I'd do it.

if you want a light truck you could get a chevy 1/2 ton 6.2/6.5 and put a 4BT in it, that's a pretty common swap. There's lots of swap info available at cummins-conversion.com and tdr.
the ram sprinter engine is another good small diesel and uses the super-common 5 speed auto that's in every dodge-chrys-jeep.
