We have already welded with it and also had a chopsaw, grinder, radio, and a air compresser running off of it and it was fine. I don't think you will have a problem if you just running the main thing like heater, water pump, fridge.

Here is what we have, I thought it was 5,000w but it is 4,000. You can get one with 5500watts,they also have othe welders on the site just like the Lincoln. We have really not looked at anyother welders since all we own are Lincoln Electric ones.
Power Arc 4000

Here is a Power Arc 5500

IF you have a tractor with a PTO consider one of the PTO driven gen-sets. MUCH less money with a lot more capacity. The only downside is that you get to go start it all when needed though it's no big deal if you leave it set up when not scratching dirt.

In my case, a John Deere 5210 (3cyl diesel) powers a Genrac 25Kw (continuous, 50Kw peak) gen-set. Plenty of power to run the entire house at once if need be (Heat Pump, water heater, well, clothes dryer, etc).

I have thought about that also, but for some reason don't like the idea of running my tractor @ high idle that long. What rpm's do you have to run tractor at? I have a JD 4410 (35hp). What size gen-set could I run. I have a 5k portable, but won't run water heater and dryer. Thanks!!!

My setup requires I run the tractor at about 2300 rpm to get 60Hz power. I wish I could have gotten the optional economizer gear option (allows 1800 rpm @ engine for 540 rpm PTO) but the tractor was a rental unit with only 100 hours on it. I got it at a very good price.

Check the fine print for your tractor to see if the PTO's rated at 35hp (at the shaft). With that, you should be able to support comfortably a 15Kw genset.
