measuring in the back yard I can do a 50x50. actually more in one direction, but depends on how close I'm allowed to come to the house.

It also depends on how much room you have on your land. It looks like you have a few other items that could stand to be under cover. It would be nice to have your pop-up and tractor protected also. Maybe build your garage big enough for the rig's and freezer and add a small detached shop/garage for your other things.

As long as you can comfortably fit the two vehicles and a decent sized workbench... then build the second story for the storage, office, bedroom or whatever.

What kind of hang ups will the local housing authority have ?? Zoning laws can become a real PIA when it comes to new construction.

garage

I am currently getting estimates for a 24x24x12 garage with 2 9x10 garage doors. Would that be big enough to walk around the truck? My truck would usually only be in there if I was working on it. My wife's jeep goes in the house garage. The second bay area would be used for the tractor, other lawn equipment, and a work bench area. My first estimate was $12,774 for the completed building excluding the electric work. The 24x32x12 estimate is $15,353. These prices include a 12 inch overhang with gutters/downspouts, insulated roof, 2 windows, 2 service doors, concrete floor, and site cleanup. How does that sound?

Just don't do what I did. In the late '80s I decided to build a garage. Dug back into the dirt and rock bank, the yard slopes up in the back. Part is dug into solid rock. Garage was to be 33 x 36 with a lift. Got the footing in, 12 inch block about 7 feet high, hole for the lift (in ground). Hurt my back, went on to two back operations. foundation sits there today. But no garage.

At a minimum, 24' x 32'. second story if you can swing it. Lots of storage, and plenty of room to work on vehicles. Also remember, if you have to make a turn into the garage, door will have to be wider than a standard 16'. or you will not be able to get in with her CRV there. Went through that with my truck and wife's older Blazer.

It also wouldnt hurt if money is on your side for this one, do plumbing for gas/propane heat and put up some nice infared heaters if you might need it during the winter. easier to do during inital construction than to do it after the fact.
