Forgot the most important rule when pulling someone else out...

Roll up your windows.

Just a quick madhat story, we were coming home from church tonight, I saw a semi stuck in the sand just off the road. I was fairly confident that I would not be able to pull him out, he was in the middle of a desert field, all sand. I can't drive in it in 2wd, I slip a lot in 4.

So... I roll up there and hook up the back of his truck, at his request. The other semi that he had there could not get him out, but he was on sand, too.

I pulled a little, jerked one time, no love.

He then told me that he was loaded. Thanks a lot, dude, 80k

We unhooked his trailer, and dug him out some more. I went around to the front and was going to try to jerk him out again, still knowing that it was a lost cause at this point, but trying to help the guy out. A little bump, nothin, then I jammed on it. Man, I got so stuck, it was not even funny. Where are those lockers I was gonna install a few years ago?

Got my truck dug out, I had my recovery tools with me. Dude gave up and called a tow. I felt bad that I could not help him, but there was no way I could have done anything.

Filled my truck up with so much sand from my tires that I used my leaf blower on it when I got home, trying to get some of that crap out.

Had a good time, that's all that mattered. Got a little vid, nothing good, I only had the kid and the camera on the phone...

Laugh, enjoy.

I was in it for the fun of it, but it would have made some great bragging rights if I would have pulled him out.

That reminds me of the time I pulled a loaded semi with my old F150. He said he was only at about 60k and it was on the street. Stuck it in 4lo with the hubs unlocked. Pulled it fine all the way to the truckstop. Pulled into the gravel parking lot and just started spinning. Locked the hubs in, then I just spun all 4. I never could get him moving again on the gravel...luckily the trailer was off the street, so we called it good...lol

Props for even trying, Madhat. Sounds like it was fun.

I got to pull out a guy who lives down the road from me, with the 01 2500 i had, he pulls tankers. He was empty though so it wasnt hard.

Thanks for the info. I will add it to my list. The first thing on my list is to let the person that is stuck hook the tow strap or chain to their own vehicle(I always check it) so if I start to pull parts off their vehicle, i'm not the one that hooked their vehicle up(bumpers, body parts, tie rods etc etc)

Good on you for trying, with that being said please listen to this next statement intently.

Never ever ever ever ever ever ever disconnect the trailer from the tractor when trying to pull or winch a semi unit out.

1- If you are successful with removing the tractor, guess what is going to happen to the trailer?

2- Once the trailer is on its face in the sand guess what you have to do to get it out? Yes sir you guessed it. Get a heavy wrecker in there, lift the trailer and crib it up, then winch out the stuck wrecker and put a tractor back under the trailer so you can get the trailer out.

Just sayin.

cudo's for trying Mark.

Oh I believe you, that is the first thing they usually do is pull the pin and try to split the unit , it quantumly complicates the job.

What I posted was fyi.
