westcoaster: Glad you already got it out of the way.

There is absolutely nothing to do to that underpowered pig to get any better mileage. Thing about it, you are pushing around a 7000 pound brick with the equivalent of a lawnmower engine.

for the money that he's going to stick into the motor, intake & exhaust, he many get 2 maybe 3 mpg at the very best better. I don't think thats worth $2K in parts to get 1-2mpg better. Keep it tuned up, index the spark plugs, change the tires to somethat will hold max air press and that's about it.
Yep, he is out of luck, those motors suck fuel in a plain 1/2 ton 4x4. A 3/4 ton is exponentially worse. On the upside, they are pretty tough motors, seen lots abused at my former employer and they go for a long time. They do have funny valve train noise though.

Well - look on the bright side...he could have bought a 6.0h-no!
The 5.4L Triton V8 is a good engine, but it's almost as thirsty as the V10. The upper end valvetrain noise you're hearing is simply normal under load with these engines. If it's really bothersome, have him take it back to the dealer and tell them to fix it or he wants his money back! That should keep them occupied for a while, or it's a quick way out of a gas hog. Why would he blindly isist on such a truck in a fuel price climate like ours?
well he has had it for a year now i guess when he bought it he said he did the math and he said he didnt drive enough to make the added fuel mileage of the diesel pay the extra beggining cost and i must say he did get a good deal on it
