Ford 5.4 in a F-250

Hey guys, we are looking at acquiring a couple f-250 service body trucks for our crew.

Anything worriesome with the 5.4 Ford V8. The diesel option isn't available in the price range we are looking at.....

Thanks. Kurt

The older 2-valve 5.4s were pretty bulletproof. The newer 3-valve engines are more powerful, but I've seen some issues with the variable cam timing caused by lack of oil changes. The system is very sensitive to having adequate oil pressure, and if cam and crank bearings start to get scored, the variable cam timing won't work properly, set faults, and generally run poorly.

Then there is the spark plug challenge, do not remember just which years, but some liked to spit plugs out. I think it was the 3 valve years.

Can't speak to newer than 2002, but our E-250 fleet with the 5.4l are dogs as far as power goes. 4 of the 5 have had transmission rebuilds one at 37K and again at 90K, the other 3 went out around 120K, only one hasn't ejected a plug. The front ends are atrocious on tire wear and handling. The transmissions seem like they should be in a 150 series at most.
