fleas

what is recommended to get rid of fleas in my yard? I dont want something that I have to mix in a sprayer. Also, the end of my hose is crushed because a certain son didn't pick up the hose out of the driveway like he was told to do.
Granules would be easiest.

Keeping Chaikwa away is a good preventative.

I've heard using lye will kill them. According to my vet anyways..

I feel for you. I lived in a house in Norfolk, Va for a couple years and if I walked out in the yard with white socks on they would instantly be covered by fleas. It was a pretty bad time for me because the house got infested too. (Scratch Scratch)
Diazinon is supposed to help but I would think that a spray would cover better and be more effective.
PS, You DO know that they sell new hoses at the hardware store, right? They also have repair parts....

I have been told that powdered sulpher works quite well but haven't tried it yet.

Sulfur is the thing to use; it will kill/ run then out pretty fast. It will also keep the chiggers away. Plus has the added benefit of acting as a fertilizer to some extent. Just spread it as you would a fertilizer.
You also have the option of just buying some sulfur tablets at the drug store (I think you can still buy them) take 1 or 2 a day. By the end of the week not only will the fleas, ticks and chiggers leave you alone so will you son , wife and all of your in-laws. By the end of two weeks total strangers will cross the street when they see you coming.

If you have fire ants up there, stop treating them. They'll take care of most of them. Then a treatment on the animals NOT from Walmart.

Go to a pool supply place and buy some diatomacious earth. It is used as a filter. This is a non-chemical and will not harm animals. You can even spread it on carpets in the house and vacuum it up later.
It works by making small cuts in the fleas exoskeleton and they dehydrate to death.

Diatomaceous Earth.

It's cheap and you can get it at any swimming pool store. I use it in our backyard. It's an extremely sharp and dry powder made from ground up fresh water hardshell algae, it cuts the skin/shell of the fleas and dries them out. Wear a mask if it's windy at all. People use it in livestock feed too so maybe a local feed market may have it. They use it in kitty litter and quicky dry for oil clean up.

I use granules made by Ortho and spread them around the entire home, they kill ants, fleas, grub worms (helps my mole problems) and a number of other insects. I never saw a flea or tick on my dog in 15 years and I live in the woods.

The stuff works but I don't let the grand kids play on the grass until it has a little time to dissolve into the ground

So this stuff won't hurt pets?? Just wondering if they could inhale it and it mess up their lungs?
What about applying Nematodes along with this stuff?
Give those fleas a double hit!!

You only need to sprinkle it around the yard, no concerns for animals at that level of dispersal. I usually take a small handful and sprinkle it onto my dogs back and pet/rub it in a little. My dog is 125lbs + so a small handful for that size equates to a tiny bit for a small dog.

From wikipedia....

Pest control

Diatomite is also used as an insecticide, due to its physico-sorptive properties. The fine powder absorbs lipids from the waxy outer layer of insects' exoskeletons, causing them to dehydrate[7]. Arthropods die as a result of the water pressure deficiency, based on Fick's law of diffusion. This also works against gastropods and is commonly employed in gardening to defeat slugs. However, since slugs inhabit humid environments, efficacy is very low. It is sometimes mixed with an attractant or other additives to increase its effectiveness. Medical-grade diatomite is sometimes used to de-worm both animals and humans. It is most commonly used in lieu of boric acid, and can be used to help control and eventually eliminate a cockroach infestation. This material has wide application for insect control in grain storage.
