Fishsing question

Hey all, I have a question for the fishermen out there.......

I like to Fish....

ie. I love to troll for Walleye, Pike, Muskey, etc. in pristine Northern waters set in remote areas.

However I have no time

So I supplement my fishing habit by fishing in local streams, rivers and lakes which have abundant stocks of Trout, Small mouth bass, pike, Catfish etc.

There is a local river (about 2 miles from where I live) that runs past a gravel pit, right at a bridge where run off from the pit meets the river it is polluted with MASSIVE FISH!!!!

The water is only 2-3' deep and somewhat murky, when the light is right you can see dozens of these lunkes which many must be in excess of 20 lbs.

Do you think I can catch one??

I'm not sure of the species, I have caught small mouth and catfish at the same location. I think these must be Carp or Suckers.

I've tried store bought "Carp Bait" (made by Berkley) and every conglomeration of worms etc. I could think of.

Anyone have any good ideas??

You'd think this would be like shooting fish in a barrel (believe me that same thought has crossed my mind) but I can't get one on a hook.

I'm sure these fish have no value to me as table fare or any sort of prized sportfish. But their sheer size and abundance has me determined to catch one just to get a look at one .

Any tips would be great, maybe I should rename thread "How To Catch A Sucker!"

p.s in this same river I caught a 20.5" small mouth Bass at another location

Very impressive fish.

Re: Fishing question

For carp, which it sounds like they are, I have always used dough ***** ( or bread rolled into *****.) I question why you would want to catch the world's ugliest fish? Those things give me the heebee-jeebees. The lips on them are too wierd.

They must be congregating at that location because the food is plentiful. If that is the case, they might not bite at anything. That is when you get out the gigging fork.

I have fished for them when absolutely nothing else is biting, but I've gotta be pretty hard up. They usually end up on the shoreline.

If they aren't carp, how's bout you and I go fishing this weekend.

Sounds like Carp, they can be fun to catch as they fight pretty well. Try making a ball out of some shredded wheat to catch them, they love the stuff.

I get it wet and form it into a ball then put it on the hook. They also like worms

You can eat Carp, the best way to cook them I have found is this;

Take a green piece of pine board and place the Carp on it, stick it in the oven at 400 degrees for 50 minutes. Take it out of the oven, throw away the fish, and eat the board

By the way, if you want to brag about catching a big one, call it a Bugle mouth bass

Maybe you should take up bow fishing I've seen rigs with a reel that attaches to the bow and you tie the end of the line to your arrow. Just check your local regulations be fore you buy one. They are probably not Carp cause they will eat right out of your hand and anything you throw in the water. Enjoy!

I thought you said you liked to fish??

Slap on a spinnerbait or a plastic worm and go catch yourself some largemouth bass. THEN you can say you've been fishing. :P

Now.....carp.....them are some nasty fish.

Much less expensive than ED's suggestion is to use m-80's. If the game warden comes along tell him your fishing if he starts to argue just light one up and hand it to him ask him if he would like to fish or talk

Secure a bit of C-4 to what ever size hook you want. Attack a skirt/feathers/piece of rope/whatever to it. Light fuze, cast, reel in slowly.

tool where are you located?
if its carp when I was a teenager I used to use a bow and a special arrow that had swivel tines on the end of the arrow tip so when you shoot it holds carp on and the arrow was solid fiberglass and heavy I bought from a sporting goods store gander mt? and the arrow is attacheched to fishing line and a reel attached to the bow.
Carp were worthless (lots of bones) but I did try some smoked before that was pretty good

I'm pretty sure they are Carp.

But I'm positive they are massive..........

I have no interest in eating a garbage eating bottom feeding vermin fish.

I know they are ugly but I'm kinda curious and wanna get a look at one. Just to see how ugly it really is
)

Plus, it's the fact that I can see them but not catch them.

This is strictly a case of man against nature!!!!!!

Shovel.... you have the right idea. I'll give those a try.

Are they available at walmart??

I had been trying those Osama brand ones.
no luck

Hoss, yep I do some large mouth fishing. Love it. My favourite gamefish to have on the line.

Although you must try a real Canadian northern pike to understand what a real predator fish is about

The baby duck eating variety

That'll make a man out of you..........

P.S Hoss, a 20.5" Small Mouth bass is a very impressive fish.

But I do still prefer the Large mouth variety

I agree that these northerns are some good fighters. I really would like to throw into the mix a 15 -20 lb Steelhead I think this is pound for pound among the best fighting fish anywhere

ok Top? You actually made me laugh out loud at your recipie...

As far as Carp is concerned ....if they are concentrated in one area like that they are probably mating and wont have any desire to eat anyways. They along with Suckers are introduced species and are garbage fish that choke out and destroy our native species. I wish the Govts. would carry out kills on these fish (DE-population for the politically correct) and try to slow down their encroachment.

Carp? Suckers?

Great, lemme at 'em!!

Carp and Redhorse Suckers, especially those found in tail races of powerplants are terrific game fish. A bit on the ugly side, but there's nothing that beats their power for their size. Only time I've seen them jump is during spawning season. They take small topwater baits and flies and will occasionally strike a crankbait.

Best all around bait is a wheaties ball, with Green Giant corn niblets worked in. We use small trebles on light line and a split shot up tight to the weeds and bank.
