First tank: 534 miles, 13.5 gallons = almost 40mpg

I just bought a new VW Jetta TDI last week as a daily driver and am real happy with it. Like our trucks, these cars take some time to break in and return even better performance.

I wasn't sure what I wanted to buy and toyed with all kinds of vehicles and it came down to a two seater sports car or a fuel mizer. I wanted something small that can easily fit into these new and tiny parking spots/lots.

After the Mustang, it takes some motor for me to really have fun with on the street, and the only one that fit the bill for me was the 350Z, but the thought of low to mid 20's on 93 Octane has lost some its luster.

So I figured I'd go for mileage, and being that I like the sweet smell of #2 (and bio); I found a nice Campenella White Jetta 5-speed with all the options I wanted and bought it well under MSRP - which was tough around here.

Its going to take some getting used to in having a car that gets better mileage than my motorcycle does.

You must be hammering that thing because my friends Jetta gets around 48 to 52 mpg!!!! I guess your breaking her in right though!!

Not even close to hammering it, but I am not babying it. Just like our Cummins, it takes time for these engines to break in and deliver the bigger numbers.

Do yourself a favor....get onto the tdi club site. All sorts of helpful VW fanatics there! Start with TDI101...great background educational material!

40mpg on an '06 is average. In the phoenix summers, we are down to 35mpg average. MD should be better, as you are finding out. Winter and ~15-20k miles you should get closer to 45. The models that can get closer to 50 or more are pre 2003 model years. In 2004 they went to a pd or unit injector that is run off the cam. The bad news: Can't adjust injection timing to improve power & mileage.

Our 06 Jetta now has 18,000 miles and is seeing a steady 46.5 mpg. Lowest was 41. It has been getting better. Prior to this it was 45 mpg for the longest time. We are getting 630 -650 miles per tank.

It'll get better. Unfortunately we have the Jetta w/slushbox and get right around 40. My 02 Golf 5spd got 50-55. Wish I had kept that one. I think the pre-PD's got a little better mileage (?).

Would still get another one, just not automatic. [duhhh] I do prefer the Golf to the Jetta myself. I like how you can remove the rear dash for lots of room.

ENJOY! Sounds like a nice one.

Thanks, I'm having a blast with this one, and do expect the mileage to rise with the miles.

I picked up a Package #1 car with Xm and sunroof and whatever else comes with Package #1.

I've been a member at TDI for a while now, but mostly for bio diesel reasons.

They have their moments of drama over there on several similar issues. Some folks have been having issues with the dual mass flywheels (sound familiar?) with the stick shifts so I'll keep my sensors up.

And its familiar reading about folks bombing the cars and then complaining about VW voiding the warranty..... VW is also pretty hard core on the oil requirements because of those aforementioned pump injectors with respect to scuffing the camshafts by using the wrong oil.

534 miles on 13.5 gallons... man i cant even get close to that on 29 gallons. i think i need a vw tdi too!! [yuk]

The last several tanks have yielded an average of around 36mpg in ours. All city driving and the A/C being wide open is killing the mileage I guess.

Nice car. My last TDI was a 2002. It was the 90 hp model. Yours is the 100 hp model and they do not get quite the mileage as the older ones. You should still be in the 40's though. Very durable cars!! My last 3 vehicles were VW diesels.
