Email failure/undeliverable notices..

I am getting quite a few dameon-failure (sp) or email delivery failure notices lately to an email I DIDNT SEND.. When you look at the header it shows my email address as the one who sent it though

Just today I had about 10 of these messages.. Each seemed to have a .PIF document attached to it as well.. What is a .pif type document??

does anyone know what this means.. I also changed my email password just in case someone got it and was logging in to my acct.. but that didnt seem to stop it..

Just wondering..

Someone someplace is spoofing your account and sending out span/viruses.

A .pif is a program information file. It normally contains information that a program needs to run. Nowadays, a .pif is normally a virus.

You may want to contact your provider and let them know that someone is spoofing your account.

Re:Email failure/undeliverable notices..

I had a virus recently that was sending out dozens of emails a day thru my computer. It was a real pain to track down. Eventually tracked it down under a 'proxy' name but unforunately can't remember the rest of it. Just in case it is similar do a search under proxy* in your computer and see what pops up.

Yeah, I was getting them too; returns from people I don't even know or have in my address book. My OS, Windows ME isn't affected by the So Big virus going around. I have a firewall and virus software always running too.

Re:Email failure/undeliverable notices..

I am using a hotmail and yahoo email accts and getting this on both of them.... I dont think is possibly that emails are being sent out from there, but I could be spoofed for sure..

I am using a Mac at home (normally unaffected by most viruses) and work has good protection..

thanks for the help

Re:Email failure/undeliverable notices..

The spoofing itself most likely isn't being done on your machine or the servers hosting your yahoo or hotmail e-mail accounts. One of the recent worms looks on the hard drive of the machine it has infected and uses e-mail addresses it finds there as the From: addresses when it spoofs. So most likely, someone you know has the virus and their machine is sending out e-mails that appear to be from you.

I was getting emails returned daily going to who knows where until I checked for my email address on here to be "hidden from the public." Now I get NONE.

This is probably most likely.
Also, If a friend/relative has an infected PC and your email address is on their address book, some worm viruses can send out an email from that PC with your email address as the source.
When the email reaches its destination and is rejected, it is sent back to the original senders address.
Because the virus sent out the email with your address as the "sender", it gets returned to you as undeliverable... even though you never sent it.
Thats the way worm viruses can work.

The difficult part is trying to figure out who's PC has your email address in their address book and is infected.

Good luck.
Rich.
